Need input from 6-spd track guys
Hey guys, I need your help. I've already contacted some of you guys about this via PM, but my professors want me to collect more data for a school project.
I'm trying to collect the following information from 6-spd guys who track their cars, whether you've experienced a failure or not. I'm particularly interested in seeing how many 6-spd guys have tracked their cars and have not experienced any failures. So if you could reply either to this thread or directly to me via PM w/ the following information, it would greatly appreciated! TIA!
1) Year of Car -
2) Estimated HP -
3) Total Track Days on Tranny -
4) Tranny Oils Used -
5) Total Miles on Tranny -
For the people who've experienced failures, please provide the following information:
6) Tranny Miles at Failure -
7) Failure Date (Month/Year) -
8) Type of Failure -
9) Solution (rebuild, 5-spd conversion, tranny cooler) -
10) Oil Used during failure -

1. 2006 IX MR
2. 320 WHP
3. 9 trackdays (pushed very hard)
4. Stock Diaqueen fluid, changed twice.
5. 9,000 miles
After reading the "Trackwhores with MR's" thread, I will be adding an tranny oil cooler and be changing the tranny oil after each trackday in an effort to preserve the life of my 6sp.
Hope this helps

I suggest everyone reply to the thread so that the data is available to the rest of the community.

Now with 5k additional miles and 20 additional trackdays. Still using Redline fluid and no problems as of yet. My heel toe is also much smoother and I sequentially downshift and blip.

We're talking about the track as in road racing, I believe. If it includes autocross and road racing, then I have a ton more data, but being in the motorsports forum and knowing that the 6spd problem is primarily caused by road racing, I figured that's what he was looking for...

Yeah, the intent of this thread was to capture information from people who've open tracked their 6-spd trannies since the 4th gear failures primarily happen cars driven on road courses.
However, the 6-spd 4th gears are rated to around 390 flywheel hp (according to Jon@TRE and from my calcs), so high powered 6-spds can see similar failures as well. So if you have close to that, I guess you can list # of drag passes or redline runs using 4th gear.
Thanks for the info everybody. Keep 'em coming!

I have a SCCA Touring 2 Lancer Evo that I run at a National Level, which means we have 40 minute straight races. Our cars get quite a bit more abuse than at HPDE due to the length of the races, usually after the 20 minute mark stuff starts to go crazy. I am pretty sure the transmission is out the door soon, had shifting issues at Pocono that I hadn't experienced before.
1) 2006
2) About 250whp, just a tune and exhaust.
3) 40+
4) Stock, I change it after every other race.
5) ~17,000
6) ~17,000
7) Soon, anticipating April of next year after the first race
8) Won't shift to 4th
9) 5 speed conversion and Setrab cooler.
10) Stock
I think the 6 speed failure is inevidable, but I think at a HPDE level most of the people should be OK, I would put on a Setrab cooler to be safe though, I think with that and frequent fluid changes you may be fine.

3) Total Track Days on Tranny - 20 or more road course
4) Tranny Oils Used - Stock, never changed.
5) Total Miles on Tranny - 39k
I've only taken it to the drag strip 3 times.
I drive it extremely hard on road courses. Only thing I change is the brake fluid and engine oil before every track day. I go through brake pads and tires every 4 or 5 days of track usage.
On the street I drive legally, meaning no speeding, no launching, no street racing.
Hope that helps.
