Tires for Minnesota

I'm thinking about getting an Evo but I'm worried about tire expense. Can anyone recommend a tire that won't turn to steel when it snows? Something a bit more durable than the Advan's but still fun?

Thanks.

for snow their really isnt a whole lot to get around it.
you best choice is to buy a set of tire and wheel from tire rack for winter driving
the best one out their are Blizzak ms series. they grip ice and snow so well it will make u forget that their is even snow outside

Yeah, I've been reading a lot about the blizzacks... I'm wondering if I want to go allweather though.... I'm not planning on continuing to buy the stock tires as there just too damn expensive and the maintanance time is too much.. I'd prefer to lose a bit of traction and with it lose some of the pains..

Where can I get some cheap steel rims? Know what size I need?

btw, this is for the Evo VIII.

Thanks a bunch!

yikes...I wouldn't go with steel rims for an EVO. I just dont see the point of saving 5-600 bucks on a 30k car! Their gonna look real ugly for one.
I'm gonna wait until someone comes out with an approved wheelset either in 16" or 17's for the winter. I definitely want to go with dedicated snows for ultimate traction. I would prefer to go 16" with some extra tire height to absorb the potholes. But with these brembo's...we'll just have to see...

Well, for the first winter anyways, I'll probably go cheap.. all my money is going for the downpayment..

I figure its better to have the car, and cheap accesories, then to not have the car at all.. I plan on slowly upgrading things down the line.. course, I'll have to buy new summer tires next year.. thats a good chunk of change...

I have been doing a lot of research on a good all season tire. After reading hundreds of reviews, I am going with the michelin pilot sport A/S. It gets great reviews in all conditions (including dry). Have a look at the tire rack web site for specs and reviews.

I am also in MN. I don't plan on Blizzaks - they are too soft, so once the road is plowed the tires wear out pretty quickly.

BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDWS are a good all-season tire that will work in the snow.

I also concur about the steel wheels - don't do it! Find a set of aftermarket wheels and tires. It'll run you arpund $1200 - $1600 and consider the cost part of the car purchase.

So far the best all-season (Exceptional in snow) tire is the continental ContiExtremeContact. It is listed as an Ultra High Performance All-Season tire. Go here for more info. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ExtremeContact nothing but great reviews and tons of references to driving in snow. The price is also great.

I've used Pilot XGTs on a prior car for year round driving in MN. They were very good in snow, slush, ice, and still gave solid dry performance. Not sure if they are avail in Evo sizing, though.

My only complaint was that the tread was pretty loud on concrete. Of course now that I think about it, the noise probably would be any louder than typical Evo road noise anyway.

I'd keep the stock rims and tires for summer and get dedicated rims and tires for winter. I use the Dunlop Winter Sport M2s on my Eclipse GSX. They are awesome in the snow. Any of the snow tires out there are going to be better than any other tire in the snow and slush in Minnesota.

If you find a rim that will fit a 3000GT VR4, then it should fit an EVO. The Millie Miglia Spider rims are popular in the 3/S community. I'm 99% sure they would fit an EVO.

later,
Curt

What is the smallest diameter wheel that will clear the brakes?

Also, how "tall" can we go (IME, electronic ride sensor components are sensitive to wheel+tire diameter) before EBD starts to be affected?

Thanks.

I really like the BF Goodrich Comp Touring tires that I have had on my Outback the past two years. They are excellent in the snow & ice, and ok in the dry (as far as grip goes). I plan on getting a set & throwing them on the stock wheels for this winter and then buying a new set of wheels next spring with aggressive summer tires.

oh, I also live in Minnesota
