Winter rims

Since it snows where I live (Illinois), I'll be needing to get a set of winter tires (which will also enable me to run rallyx!) for my EVO. I assume many of you are doing the same. But I'd prefer to get a different set of wheels for my winter tires so I don't have to keep swapping tires on my advans. But I also don't want to spend a lot of cash on my winter wheels, since they are, well, winter wheels.

So what are my options? Are there any cheap wheels I could get for winter? And what are the rest of you doing? I know I could use the advans for my winter wheel and get a better summer wheel, but I love the advans! Any advice?

Thanks.

We need to find out something here, because I don't have much extra money so I'm trying put a little aside towards wheels and tires before winter gets here.

i doubt there's any steelies that would clear the brakes but if you can find some that's what i would go with. super strong, super cheap and who cares what happens to them. they might be heavy and ugly, but it's better then bending a good rim with those winter pot holes and tearing them to hell and back with salt and road debris. i mounted some steelies with graspics on my Infiniti and it became a winter machine!

I live in CT and also have thought about what to do for the winter. I will be doing many ski trips up north.

I'm either going to switch to all seasons by the end of the year, since these advans are going to wear out fast anyways. But I know I'm gonna hate the grip when the roads are dry and I want to go for a rip.

Next idea...is to purchase snow tires and get them fitted on the Enkei's and then just switch them back in the spring to some nice summer tires. Bit of a pain though...

I think the best option is to purchase another set of wheels, same exact size and offset...and to throw on a set of good quality snow tires also the same size as the advans.

This shouldn't have any adverse affect on the alignment.

I've thought about 16" wheels....the extra sidewall height would help absorb potholes better...but the chances of finding one which will clear the brakes...is probably slim to none huh?

There is no cheap wheel out there that will clear. Rotas do not come in the correct offset as of yet. Discount tire does have $150 wheels that should fit. As far as the stock tires vs. all seasons, you will have better traction in weather below 32 degrees with almost any all season compared to stock. DO NOT DRIVE IN THE SNOW IN THE STOCK TIRES. I almost wrecked my car within a week of getting it because of that. These tires have no cold weather capabilities. Look into an all season tire rated good for snow. Stay away from snow tires, they will not serve you well as you will need to drive on them when weather is cold. Here in Illinois thats about half the year. The silica compound in snow tires will be worn out in one season if used for this duration.

For those interested in affordable yet strong winter wheels. We will have the Rota Actions arriving mid July in 5x114.3 offset 35. Offset 35 is good enough for winter wheels on an evo. The size is 17x7.5 offset 35

i figure that by end of summer these advans will pretty much be goners (10-15k is their expected life with normal driving, which i definitely do not do).. so i'm just gonna get winter/all season tires installed on them... and get a new set of 18's with summer grippy tires which i was planning on getting anyway for shows for the time being..

Just buy some OEM rims. You'll see them on sale frequently on this site.
