i have found after looking only a few mins that 245/35/18 are much harder to come by than 40's.

You gain nothing if you get 18x8s except maybe some looks (subjective). Go with an 18X8.5 or 18X9 and get a good 255/35-18 or so...
Finding a good all around street and autox tire in 255/35/18 is the problem...
