tire size/performance question:

What I want to know is (for driving performance) which size tire am I better off with
if the wheel is 18x8 --should I go with 245/40/18 ??

I tried figuring out what size I could use by the wheel/tire package thing and they offer tires for it from 235/50 to 345/30 to 205/40
thats a large range???

I am guessing nothing really matters but the diameter size which is 18" but I knew that. ---It is the 8 (in 18x8) that was confusing me --I guess there is a lot of play when it comes to tires in that 8.

I just wants some opinions on what tire size would be best for wheels that are 18x8

40 is a bit tall for an 18, a 245 35 18 would suit fine with an 18x8

Well man –I have learned a very important lesson –I just wished I would have gave a little more attention to exactly what most were saying JJ
Or I should have priced my tires before I selected a wheel –
Being ignorant I thought I would not have a problem getting any size tire of the brand and model I wanted. That’s where assumption is stupid in the tire game.
If I had it to do over –I would have stuck with the 17 and went wider with like maybe a 17x8.5 or 9 which is kinda what most are saying to do

Finding a 245/35/18 is not going o be easy and it is quite a little more in price (not to mention I feel now I am downgrading performance)
Plus I will not be able to find the tire I want like the RT615 or MX
I can only find 245/40/18 in the Falken Rt615 and I have not even tried to look for the Kumho MX

I know I screwed up –L

I guess I will just have to deal with it and go to another wheel/tire in the future

Just wanted you to know I am about whooped ---the sad part to me is that I know the tires are the most important part of the car

Does Goodyear make a good tire –I can find 245/35 ‘s easily in mainstream brands like Bridgestone and Goodyear (they just cost a little more)
Thanks

I found a 245/40/18 in the Falken RT-615 ---I hope I like it
Thanks for your post

your reply sounded good to my ears after being heavily criticized by one guy for buying a set of these in 18x8

His comments were in reference to tires, not rims. I don't think it was smart to purchase aftermarket 18s that are the same width as stock, because you gain nothing from it. You end up with a larger diameter rim, which puts the weight further from the hub, but you don't increase your contact patch over someone with stock rims and larger tires. 245/40s also have a shorter sidewall than stock.

Again, I thought you said it wasn't too late to send them back. Oh yeah, you said the shop didn't have anything else good and you weren't sure if they'd give a refund. Did you find out yet?

+1 - That was my suggestion, but he thought that was too big for an 18X8. Technically, it is if you base it off the manufacturer's suggestions, but in practice, they work...

I will do it different next time around -- I had ordered Falken RT615 (245/40R18)
I just hope they fit ok...i want to move on so I can get the DP, TBE and MBC installed thats been sitting in my living room for two weeks then its off to see 4wheelslide for the tune...so I will be happy for now if all goes well with the tire/wheel mount in the morning.
I appreciate all the good advice --I have learned a great deal about wheels and tires from you guys and I sincerely thank you.
For the next time (as soon as I get some money back into my car budget) I will go back to a wider 17" (Volks or Rota) with 255/40R --then i can move on to the suspension after that..In the mean time I will keep my eye out for a good deal on better wheels...thanks again

You shouldn't be stuck bewtween those tires, because you shouldn't be using either of those tires. The main thing is you shouldn't go through the large expense of 18" rims and 18" tires while getting wheels with the same WIDTH as stock. That removes the whole point of getting rims, which is to improve performance. You can't do that with larger diameter rims that have the same width as stock. You gain nothing if you get 18x8s except maybe some looks (subjective). Go with an 18X8.5 or 18X9 and get a good 255/35-18 or so...

yeah thanks warr. i just found out the wheels im getting arent made in 18x8. they are 18x9 so plus one for those. so ill probably put a 245 on those. just dont know about the sidewall. i think the tire i want to put on there comes in a 245/40/18 and a 245/35/18. you think 35 will give that sidewall a little stiffer feel?
