Damaged stock wheel with lugnuts--fixable?
Damaged stock wheel with lugnuts--fixable?
Guys...I can't believe I'm writing this after how much work I've done to my car myself.
I was putting my wheel back on after doing the roll center correction kit on my car, and between fitting the wheel, hand-tightening the lugs, impacting them to roughly 80lbs, lowering the car, and torqueing them down with my wrench--the wheel shifted. I realized this when while expecting only a one of two turns of the torque wrench I hit 3-4...and then realized something was wrong. Not only did I strip out one of the wheel studs...
But when I took the lugs back off, low and behold I find that it was offset and all the wheel literally got eaten up on the NE corner of each hole. That explains why it stripped the stud. Damn Damn Damn. I've taken that wheel off probably hundreds of times...and ironically this happens right when money is tight.
I doubt this kind of thing fixable, and have already replied to a couple of threads about single wheels. All the lugs still hold the wheel, other than the one with the stripped stud. Should I be worried about the integrity of the wheel at this point?

You will need to go buy a new wheel stud. You can get them at the dealership. I have done this before except i could not remove the nut out. I had to drill my wheel stud out. Althought it is possible driving with only 4 lug nuts, but i would not recommend it. Depending on the application, wheels studs are usually simple to replace. Just hammer the old ones out, line up the splines on the new one and hammer it in. Depending on the application you many require to remove some brake componets out.
I guess I should have rephrased some of the original text. When I was talking about fixing it, I meant the wheel itself...
But yea, I think I know a local guy who just had his wheel hub replaced, I'm going to try and get a hold of one of his studs (for free).
And I already bought another single wheel. I just couldn't drive around knowing that my wheel was chewed up where it mounts to the car. Though I probably would have been fine.
