Tires after autoX
Tires after autoX
I autoXed my car this past sunday on the stock yokohama tires. Me and a friend droved in at, 16 runs back to back. The front tires are heavily worn, it feels like the front tires have about 1/2 the amount of thread left compared to the rear tires. The front tires are badly chewed up too.......
Guys out there who autoX, how many runs will the stock yoko tires last?

You could probably tear them up pretty good in just 16 runs if they are underinflated, without sufficient front camber, and on an abrasive surface.
What tire pressures were you running? I've been increasing my pressures each autoX, and am now running something around 45 psi front, 42 psi rear. After four autoX days (about 18 runs), there is some noticeable tread wear, plus this most recent autoX was on what seemed to be a particularly abrasive surface, and I have some small hairline cracking in the shoulder of the RF tire (time to rotate, I guess). But nothing that seems worrisome to me.
And if you are autoXing, dial in maximum negative camber at the front end. This will prolong tire life and improve cornering grip.

My cambers are stock spec, L=-0.24, R=-0.49. What should it be?
Isnt the maximum tire pressure on the yokohamas 44psi? I just used the cold tire pressure, 29/32....i dont know what it is while it was hot during the run. The track was pretty abrasive.
What is the maximum camber allowed on the car? And would i have to change the spec for castor/toe and whatever else if i max out the camber?

My stock tires went through 3 events and 2 practice days, then they were at the wear bars. The terrible alignment from the factory didn't help though, with .67" toe-in for the front. Likely I could of gotten several more events on them.
Make sure you rotate front to back after every event, spread the wear out. Max camber for stock class would be -2 degrees, as that is what the suspension is designed to make... though -1.5 to -1.8 is closer to real numbers without caster/camber plates.

Way too low tire pressures. Your car would have been much quicker and handled better with more pressure. I start out with about 43-45 front and 40-42 rear. I usually adjust down to about 42-43 front and 38-40 rear ...that is where I've been getting optimal contact. I accidently ran low pressures at one event..due to faulty tire pressure gauge...later found out I was running about 35/33....and it KILLED me. My car handled like crap and cost me several places in my class. This past week I won my class in ESP using 42.5/38-39.
I have about 5 autox's and 20-22 runs on the stock tires. They are wearing on the outside edges a good bit. What really killed my tires was running one event in the rain..on wet course...the skidding was like sandpaper on the tires...causing twice the wear on a comparable dry course.
too much front tire wear in front also sounds like you're coming into the turns with too much speed, hefty DSM's have the same deal, it takes some practice to avoid the whole point and shoot syndrome....
