Running on Spare tire for extended use...

Quick question.

I got a nail in my tire the other day, and swapped on the spare tire (on the front driverside fyi). Now is it ok to run the car on the spare for 15 miles a day?

Reason being is I ordered some tires that should be here mon/tues and need to drive to work still.

I have driven on it the past 3 days, and now it seems like its developing a whine sound in the front (can easily hear it with the driverside window down). Plus when coming to a stop and when I take the shifter out of gear, it makes even a louder whine while coasting at slower speeds.

I'm not sure if its just the spare tire making the sound, or my tranny/tc?

Any advice would surely be appreciated.

With my open diff in the front (03) would it even matter running a spare in the front?

Thanks

Oh yeah, I've taken it to one tire dealer and they said they wouldn't fix the tire due to the screw being too close to the sidewall. What do you guys think?

The spare is meant only to be driven to a place where you can get a new tire or patch the old one. Sounds like the damage is already done. You can probably get away with using two different thread depth in the front but still not recommended...as I did for 5K due to ignorance. FWIW my car is still fine.

So you're running the compact spare for more than one day? Ouch. That whine you're hearing is your car crying because it knows you don't love it.

Once you have your new tires on there, if it still whines you'll want to research "transfer case whine" on here. Just call a friend and ask for a ride, or get a cab. There's no reason for you to be so negligent.

I searched on here before I decided to run on the spare. Someone on here said it's ok to run the spare due to the 03 having an open front dif. Not true then eh?

I'm going to get a plug tommorrow...We'll see what happens.

But I'm still curious whether running a donut in the front is going to do any damage. Seems like every thread I've read on this matter is split.

Did you ever notice any damage? I've been running my donut for the last couple days while waiting for tires in the mail. I don't hear any whine, but I'm scared now.

Mitsubishi FTL.

Its not Mitsu's fault - we have AWD, with a transfer case. Running 1 smaller dia tire will cause that axles diff to work differently (it thinks 1 wheel is always spinning) and is transferring that into the TC.

Like others have said - tire plug it.

It's Mitsu's fault for including a spare tire that isn't appropriate for the car. Why would any manufacturer include a spare tire on a car it shouldn't be used on? Why include a spare at all? In fact, I'd be better off without a spare. Sure it would've left me stranded, but I wouldn't have had to risk permanent damage to my tc/diff.

Evos should come with full size spares. Even my sister's FWD Passat comes with a full size spare.

Mitsu strikes again.

Things aren't quite that lame. The spare is the same diameter as the stocker.
