What brake fluid to use?
Hey OilDoc I am interested in the Amsoil Dot 4. I think its main competitor is Motul RBF600. How often should you change the Dot4? I assume its more hygroscopic than typical fluid. Is once a year still fine with a few autox/light tracking?
Also I should probably add I live in the Seattle area which gets more rain than typical places. Car is driven about 8k miles per year.

Rule of thumb... Bleed once per year, completely flush every other year....
BTW... Congrats.... most people say hydro.. LOL

Wow, talk about crazy-racing-motor head-overkill Batman... As the OP stated, for normal daily driving, a $6 bottle of Valvoline Synpower is more than adequate for Average Daily Driver Joe. I do prefer ATE Super Blue, but the Valvoline is MORE than adequate. Anyone telling you that you HAVE to have better fluid for a street car is convincing you, because they have convinced themselves. Granted, I'd not step below the Valvoline though.
I'm not busting on the people, or suggestions above as they are all great quality fluids... just not to the point the OP was asking.

I kind of look at it like this. IF you can buy a better product, needed or not, for a reasonable sum of money more, I will Always go with the better product.
ESPECIALLY with Brake Fluid as MOST People will Never take care of Brake Fluid as it should be. The system Should be bled once per year and Completely Flushed every other year.. You can lose 40% of your braking effectiveness due to the hygroscopic nature of Brake Fluid within 2 years.. 40.. FORTY... Four-ZERO %... almost Half.... and that is in a good sealed system..
Then the part I love, is the guy that keeps a bottle of Brake Fluid on the shelf after it has been opened.... It is garbage within a couple days....
Yes, Valvoline SynPower is a good Fluid... but for a few dollars more, I'll opt to run a better fluid...
Doc
I don't understand how brake fluid is ruined after it sits on the shelf after it's been opened. Obviously, all of the fluid in all of our brake reservoirs are ruined too because they were opened at one point. ???
Brake fluid sitting on the shelf after the seal is broke will attract moisture through condensation.
That is also part of the reason you should bleed your brakes or hydraulic clutch every year and completely flush every other year..
You cannot see bad brake fluid and cannot tell when the fluid even has water in it as it does not seperate or change color..

i've been using Valvoline Synthetic Dot 3 and 4 brake fluid (low-moisture formula)
from the specs, I've been pretty happy with it..
Boiling Point: 480
Wet Boiling Point: 311
Cheap enough and easy enough to get (from autozone). Spent the extra money buying other fluids for a Motive powerbleeder instead.

The wet boiling point of the Valvoline is actually the bare minimum allowed for a Dot 4 and the minimum dry boiling point allowed is 446
AMSOIL Series 600 DOT 4 Racing Brake Fluid has a dry ERBP of 304°C (580°F) and wet ERBP of 210°C (410°F).

The Valvoline fluid is much better than the stock fluid..
