Tire Sizing and the Star Specs

Hey guys I don't know much in the area of proper tire sizing and the benefits of using different sizes other then the stock size. My yokohamas are basically slicks right now and I have decided on the Dunlop Star specs since I'm going back to school at ASU where it is basically sunny 365 days a year so I can get away with extreme performance summer tires all year round. I just want to know what size would you guys recommend getting and why there are better sizes then stock. I have a 06 SE with the 17 inch BBS rims 8 inches wide. I heard 255/40/17 is the best size instead of 245/45/17 or whatever the stock size is. Is this correct? Thanks a lot.

I'd stay with the stock size tires on the stock wheel (235/45-17).

235/45-17 is perfect for the stock rims. 255/40-17 would be next in line, but you don't gain much from the extra width due to the rim only being 8".

I don't recommend 245/45-17 due to being taller than stock to a degree that is noticeable and throws off the speedometer a little and makes your gearing taller. I actually use 245/45-17 drag radials for drag racing SPECIFICALLY to extend my 4th gear, but you wouldn't want that effect for a regular DD.

Best to stick with stock. Not gaining much with the other sizes and there might be fit issues with them anyway.

i have them in the 255/40/r17, poor tire guys took 3 of them with the tire machine to get them on the stock rims. since i can't compare them to the same tire in stock size i can't say if there is an improvement or not. compared to the stock advan. the steering response is slightly sluggish but overall grip is higher.

tire rack shows 235/40/17 3# lighter per tire then the oem sized 235/45. 12# less unsprung weight is pretty nice.

right now dunlop is offering $50 rebate on a set of 4. at $60 less then the RE01-r's to begin with, thats a pretty sweat deal. a little too good to pass up, especially since I'm due for another set of rubber real soon to replace my worn re01's.

235/40 is smaller than stock and will have shorter gearing. I don't think most will want to use that size.

yeah, I'm looking at the shorter gearer as an advantage. I don't care about top speed. quicker acceleration, in exchange for slightly lower speed in gear, plus an extra 3# off ever corner is a win-win in my book.

too bad they are on backorder.

I got a set last week of 235/45/17. Tire rack was the only place I could get em ended up about $690 installed plus I have the $50 rebate coming. No place that doesn't have them in stock can get them for at least several weeks maybe a month or more I was told. One shop even tried to tell me they aren't available in the US yet.

I seriously thought about the 235/40/17 for the same reasons mentioned, lighter and lower effective gearing. The 45s seem a little beefier than the Advans and the ride feels softer so I'm thinking that th 40s might be the way to go. I'd like to hear if anyone tries them.

As far as the 235/45s, I haven't driven on them enough to say a lot about em but I like them. They ride good and look good and seem to handle good.

I'd pull the trigger on the 235/40's now if I could find them...

But why would you want lower gearing? You know I autocross and road race, and the last thing I want is shorter gearing, which would make me have to shift even more often, which is not a good thing. Our gearing is already pretty good, and I have huge torque, so I wouldn't want that and wouldn't think you would.

I am not convinced a 235/40-17 really weighs 3lbs less than the same tire at 235/45-17. That's a huge difference.

You wouldn't want shorter gearing because your car is setup much different then mine. My car is not modified much at all. I'm running the stock turbo with 20psi PEAK boost, thats right less boost then stock, when I autox. I did eliminate the taper though with an MBC. my only mods are TBE & a flash by yours truely. That right there is more then enough power for my setup and the courses around here.

I autox & HPDE a lot, but in autox I only shift one to 2nd gear and thats it. I'm never @ redline at anypoint on the course. Not yet anyway. Probably because I'm still on stock suspension and street tires so I can't carry as much speed thru corners or exit as fast as a modified car. still though, I shift @ 7k on the street when I need to and the smaller diameter tire will only make me have to shift, in theory, a couple hundred RPM higher, no big deal.

I'm not 100% sure about the weight difference, their site says it but I take it with a grain of salt until I see for myself. even if its half that amount I'd be happy.

If you NEVER have high speed portions in your autox courses, then maybe, but I have done a lot of of autocrosses, and sometimes I don't make it to 6500rpm in 2nd and others I am on the rev limiter (8k) if I don't shift to 3rd. That part is up to you.
