Tire Wear..

Hey Everyone,

I've been researching all the various things that an Evo owner will deal with on a yearly basis. Next year I will be buying a used Evo (2003 to 2006) which ever I can afford at the time, and I've read a lot about people going through a set of tires once a year ( or more depending on driving style ).. Having said that, I'm aware that Yokohama Advans seem to be the standard tires on this car as well as the replacement choice for many it seems, so my question is, racing aside, for someone who is using the Evo as I would be for daily driving and not for racing purposes, it seems the reported life expectancy for ANY tire on this car is 19,000 miles and that seems to be pushing for those who state they "drive the car like my grandma".

What causes the tires to wear so quickly on these cars? Is it the combination of the type of camber and wheel alignments the cars is typically set with? Or is it a combination of that with the compound and quality of the tire, and is there anyway to prolong tire life on these cars? I imagine Yoko Advans aren't the only tires that can be put on the car (standard size I mean, not talking about custom rims with custom tires ala 18", etc). Again, I'm looking for responses to this in relation to a non-racing daily driving style.

Any Feedback would be appreciate. Thanks in advance!

The more aggressive tires have a shorter life, there are higher mileage options

Wow, have you not been doing any reading.

Yes, the AO46 (OE) do wear quicker than normal. They only are rated at 160 tread wear.

They are NOT the replacement tire of choice - the Dunlop Z1s or B'stone REO1s are.

19k? Again, not true. I have 98k on my car. My street (DD) tires get 30-40k of life and that is with -2/-1 camber. My race tires get a half/season out of them.

Poor factory alignments - settings all over the place and lots of toe. Toe is what kills the tires.

If you want to prolong tire life - get an alignment of -1/0 and 0 toe, rotate the tires every 5k. And get tires with a higher tread life.

my 2003 is a daily driver. I am at 80K and am about half way thru my 3rd set. I drive agressively for the street; but you should get 30k on most tires (except the advans) if you are rotating your tires and are alighned....
Just a quick thought, if you are concerned about the cost/overhead of tires when buying a car you may want to think about another vehicle because the tires are not a real big deal on an evo - there are many other monsters to worry about especially if you haven't owned it from day one...

Like any car...
1. Mind your pressures
2. Be good about regularly rotating the tires
3. Get an alignment any time the ride height changes

And if you do end up getting an Evo, don't cheap out on the tires. I got roughly 25k out of my first set of OEM Advans.
