Nail punctured sidewall :(

As I was walking towards my garaged car I noticed a little gray dot at the left rear tire. I got down on the floor to take a closer look to find out what it really was: a ****ing nail on the right side of the tire! It looks like this: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...ireRepairs.jsp I am now kicking myself for not getting the tire warranty.

These Dunlops Z1 SS barely have 500 miles on them!! I never got to use these tires to it's potential yet, due to 2 jacked up alignments because the firestone near my house are incompetent liars. Enough of the ranting...

Do you guys think I should take out the nail and see if it leaks? Maybe it's a little nail that didn't do much damage? If that's not the case I know I have to replace the tire because it's not recommended to patch outside of belted areas.

If it's not losing air, just leave it in till you get a replacement tire.

And you cannot repair if it's near the sidewall.

I have patched sidewalls, you can use a semi truck tire patch (it is big like your hand) but I would NOT recommend it on an Evo.

Ya, and if you track/AX on these tires - that would not be safe.

i feel for you, im sorry to hear that. i just recently found an audi/vw screw in my brand new RE-01r's. screw came from annoying roomate's gf just to top it off..the screw was just on the border of the diagram you linked, was able to do a patch from the inside and seal it tight. it barely pierced the rubber, im talkin needle tip size hole, had to drill it bigger to plug it. is your nail def outside the patchable area? like the above poster said, if its not leaking air just leave it in before you get a new tire. i had to leave mine in for 2 weeks before a friend could patch it just make sure to keep checking the pressure. also depends on what kinda driving your going to be doing. good luck friend, crappy situation

Thanks man! It is and has not been leaking any air for the past couple days ( I haven't drove the Evo in 3 days prior of finding out today). The head of the nail is pretty pretty big.. a little bigger than 1/4 of an inch. I doubt I can save it it's almost exactly like the picture except with different thread patterns of course.

Would a 500 mile difference be really bad for the car when/if I get the tire replaced?

Whatever you do don't remove the nail please. It's holding air and I'd just try to not drive it if you can. Also since they only have 500 miles I highly doubt theres much wear on the tire, so you can probably only replace the one tire and be fine, but I'd double check the tread depth just to be sure.
