Tire Recommendation

I'm currently running Kumho ECSTA ASXs on my 03 Evo. I'm definitely not a fan of this particular model tire, it's loud, horrible handling and they are starting to wear pretty bad in the inside of the tires after almost 20k miles.

What's a good recommendation for a tire? I'd like to stay below $200 a piece so the Advans are out

I'd prefer a sport tire, I drive my car daily. I was thinking about Michelin Pilot PS2s.

Have you looked at the Nitto Invo's?

Get alignment checked. Zero out that toe.

Define daily driver. I like the ASX. Handle ok for an all season. But if you want the best AO46 replacements - Dunlop Z1 Star Specs.

Perhaps a summer type tire v. extreme summer tire (Z1's). The Hankook RS2 are a good summer type tire for DD.

+1 on Z1 if you're not seeing winter conditions.

haha... you got 20k miles and you're complaining.

I'm happy to get 8k out of my tires

(But I recommend star specs for summer only -- they get quite "wooden" in the super cold).

Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs - great performing tire at a great price. Tire Rack has 'em at $135/ea for the stock size, or plus size it and go for a 245/40R17 for a bit more aggressiveness. These tires are very popular among performance enthusiasts and sold out last summer. Everyone at the autocrosses who had to run street tires were jumping on these because of the performance/cost value.

Those Kumho ASX tires are no match for a good performance tire.

You should get your alignment checked. I don't think tire brand has anything to do with abnormal wear like you are experiencing.

You are exactly right, it's probably an alignment problem not the specific tire. Funny thing is I rotate them every 6k but my rear tires aren't worn at all. I did just get a 4 wheel alignment and they recommended I rotate the tires. When they did the alignment they said nothing major was out of line. I've read of others having issues getting alignments done, some have said that there is no alignment procedure for these cars which I find funny.

These suckers are loud. I wish I knew someone else with an Evo so I could see if they sound similar even with a different make of tire. My only comparison is a brand new Evo 9 I test drove. The Advans are noisy below 20mph only. The 9 was much quieter than my car.

For me daily driving is to work, pickup the kids and back home. Maybe 15-20 miles daily. These tires definitely don't handle. I'm not blasting corners all the time but every now and then I like to take corners and have fun. These tires just slide out from under you. Say I take a corner on a wide sweep at 35mph and it slides. It is kinda fun controlling it though

Thanks for the opinions. I'm going to have to check out my options. I initially thought of Michelin because they typically ride really nice, last a long time and are pretty quiet. I'm not stuck on one manufacturer though and I only bought the Kumhos because I got them for $75 a piece new.

Hey guys, I need to get tires within the next month (same situation as OP), if not sooner, and I am looking into tires. I am leaning towards the Star Specs but I haven't heard anything about how many miles they last, I want something that is a little economical. Anyone run the Star Specs to their last miles?

Thanks,
-Will

Dunlop Direzza Star Specs. I love them. Best tire for the price.
