Good DD suspension for Evo

Hey guys,

I just bought an 2004 Evo 8 GSR Apex Silver!

I am clueless as far as suspension goes for this car. My previous experience was with Honads and the "best" suspension was considered Koni Yellows with Skunk2 coilovers or similar.

What is good for the Evo? I don't want too low of a ride, probably 1-2 finger gap with stock wheels. Can I get away with some nice springs and stock shocks? Or which coilovers with stock shocks? Something that is comfortable and will handle as well/better than stock?

Thanks!

Your best bet would probably be a spring/strut set-up. Personally i recommend people stay away from sleeve type coil-overs, those are never good. Swift Springs are highly recommended as well as GTWorx springs. They both work well with stock struts. And they both offer a decent drop and improved handling and street manners. Hope this helps. MIKE... Your turn.

It sounds like a set of one of the more decent springs is good for you. Like Brian said, the GTWorx and Swifts seem to be at the top of most lists, with Swifts offering a more significant drop and the GTWorx offering a bit more suspension travel while still appearing lowered. Both are praised highly and are known to increase handling.

Get some bilstiens and put some swifts on them. Highly recommended by swift owners.

Oh yea and did i say to STAY AWAY from the sleeve coil-overs, those spell nothing but trouble and blown struts for performance oriented vehicles like the Evo. I never understood why the honda crowd loves them so much. They only hinder performance.

tein S tech springs.. everyone screams IT KILLS YOUR STRUTS!! no, it dosnt. it might alter your handling a tiny bit, but only enough to notice if your a HXC track driver. they have a great stance, and are perfect for DD ive had mine for about 10 months, and my struts are fine. and extreamly in expensive.

I would have said something about the Tein's BUT since i have no experience with any of tein's products i am not able to give sufficient info in either direction. I have heard several convincing arguments on both side of that fence but none was more concise than the other SOOO do not have enough information to make a knowledgeable recommendation.

well considering its a daily, he wont be sacrificing any performance, and IMO they look the best, and drop the car the most. to some people (like me) form over function is more important.

overall im extreamly happy with my teins

YAY lol a fellow coil-over man. I personally have had enough with spring/strut set-ups BUT the OP did say he wants a "not too low" drop and great street manners and increased handling so hence why i am suggesting struts&springs. BUT in my own personal choice i would go with a nice set of entry level coil-overs. Oh and Booster i'm glad that you have found your way of modifying. Function over form isn't for everyone. I'm glad you found a niche that you enjoy. Dont let anyone stop you from feeling like that. Because in the end we are all out to do the exact same thing, Build a car to OUR OWN personal tastes. Cheers.

i would definately stay away from the tein s-techs, its the worst investment ive made on the evo so far. My factory struts are nearly done and ive owned them for approx. 6mo. I would lean towards the swift bilstein setup based on reviews of other owners.

The nice thing about paying the extra bucks for the coilovers is that they are valved properly for the spring and the ride height is fully adjustable if you were to order them new you can even get them custom valved for comfort ,,,,, plus if you sell your old setup it actually doesnt cost too much ,,,,
i scavenged the FS section and got a great deal on mine i will be able to get my money back outta them even 2 years from now.
My 02.

tanabe makes good lowering springs too... but if yo dont want just springs, you can always pay an arm and a leg for the full suspension...
