tire wear question

right now i'm on dunlop star specs. i wasn't paying attention to my tire wear too much and so i waited too long to rotate my tires. the tires that were on the front (now on the rear) are really worn and one is just starting to show cord. the ones that were in the rear (now in the front) look like that have plenty of life left in them. so i have 2 questions:

1. is it safe to run one last autocross on a tire that's just starting to show cord and (obviously from my wear patterns) doesn't get too much wear?

and

2. should i buy a whole new set of tires, or just replace the rears since the ones that are in the front now look fine?

replace the ones that show tire wire. any tire that shows wire is not safe. they'll give out any minute. and your camber setup is aggressive so with that said you will always get tire wear that way. but you always gain and lose somewhere depending what your car needs are. but -2.5 is very aggressive. im happy with -2.1 and -1.4 and tire wear is not as bad with good handling still.

Shouldn't pass tech with a tire like that. Get 2 new rear ones. Double check toe in your alignment.

Agreed. Do you run with coilovers, by any chance?

Did. Megan tracks - meh.

But ultimately, no. I was on Swift SpecR springs, Bilstein HD struts, and Swift sways.

Heh...I meant that question to the original poster. Cuz my tires used to wear like that when I had stock suspension (camber at the time was -1.7f/-0.5r). Now that I have coilovers, it wears incredibly even (camber now is much more agressive -2.3f/-1.3r).

From the look for the rear pic, I think I see a threaded body.

Toe is the main issue. I ran aggressive camber also, if my toe was out, I knew it quick.

i haven't had my alignment done for about 8 months, so i might want to check toe, but i had it set at as close to 0 front and rear as the shop that did it could get.

i am on coilovers.

basically i didn't rotate my tires when i should have. i was going by miles instead of actual wear. so, though my tires hadn't been rotated in only about 3k miles, that was 6-7 autocrosses and the worn ones were on the front, so... yeah. i didn't think they were that bad, though.

it is ok to get just 2 new tires? my buddy was saying that's not a good idea because the awd. if i get just 2, should i have them shaved? if i do get just 2, then i'll put the new ones on front and the still decent ones on the rear so the new ones wear faster to the level of the other 2.

Get a tread depth strip or reader. See how much different there is from the new depth.

Buy new ones and replaced the corded tires. Not a good idea to push tires on a track that far gone.
