snow tires

I have an extra set of stock evo wheels and plan to have a true winter set, not all season, that I will use in the snow, does anyone else plan on getting winter specific tires on theirs? What are you gonna get? I have another month or so before I will need them, but I just want to see if anyone has tried winter tires that they thought were really good.

The original Blizzak WS-50. Nothing better, and I've burned through a lot of different snows.

I don't have any personal experience with snow tires...but I do plan on getting some in the future.

A friend of mine loves his Artic Alpins by Michelin...he says they give up some deep snow/ice traction for more dry performance vs. Blizzaks. He also said that he'd recommend Blizzak LM-22's or Pilot Alpins (H or V speed rated) over the less speed rated WS-50's or Artic Alpins.

Personally I'd go with the Pilot Alpins because roads here in Madison, WI are usually dry most of the winter and I'll be just as concerned with dry performance and longetivity as I am with snow traction. I have Bridgestone's now though and love 'em...they make great tires...again though I think I'd favor the performance and dry handling over the ultimate snow/ice traction for an Evo.

You really can't go "wrong" with either tire though I'd think.

Nokian Haka 2's the ultimate snow tires. They will eat Blizzaks for breakfast. The problem with Blizzacks is that the winter compound is not the full depth of the tire. The Haka's have the compund the full depth. I will be running 225/45 17's on 7.5" wheels. Tires are about 190 a piece but I will never run a different brand again. I've done many Blizzack and wintersports but have foud the Hakka's to be amazing as a true snow tire. I also have run the Haka 1's on my S4 and my wifes's A6 Avant.

I found out the other day that Yokohama makes a snow tire, specifically designed for the Evo. I haven't seen a picture of it yet, but Tirerack has them. It's called the Yokohama AVS Winter.

And it's in the specific size for our tires. $150ish a tire. Neal, any pics?

I found a review on the yokahama avs winter from a canadian site, and who gets more snow than canada.

http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/020913-3.htm

So far I have only found our size in the $200 range.

You can't compare the Hakka 2 with a Blizzak. The Hakka is studded and illegal in most states.
The Blizzak is the best harsh condition snow tire that is studless.

On the full reply to topic page, there's a link at the bottom to attach a file.

Neil: Isn't a bit odd that Tirerack's picture of the AVS Winter, only listed in 235/45-17, and supposedly made specifically for the EVO, is shown mounted on an AT rim that isn't listed as fitting the EVO?

Why is the Tirerack tire an R rated tire when in fact another vendor has it as an H rated tire?

Is the Tirerack web page in error or is the tire in fact H rated?

I presume that comes from a data 'bot on the web page. On most specs page, you'll see tires listed as "235/45HR17 94H" (LM22) or "235/45VR17 94V" (M3). The HR/VR nomenclature is obsolete.

The specs page for the AVS Winter lists "235/45R17 94H", which is the technically correct nomenclature.

The 94H is the rating. So, yes, the AVS Winter is H-rated.
