What to do about bilstein shock failure?

No worries, it didnt happen on the car! Ok so I bought a set of bilsteins from a member on here, when my friend and I went to go change the springs over to the front shock I bought from him, we got the spring on, put the hat on and everything, put the bolt on and went to go screw it in with his air ratchet. The bolt gets about a 1/4 way on and all of the sudden, the entire threaded stud at the top of the shock snapped in half! The ratchet was not a high torquing ratchet at all and it hasnt ever snapped anything before.

I kinda want to contact Bilstein directly about it, that piece should not have snapped off like a pretzel its a pretty solid, thick piece of metal.

People say you shouldn't use an impact gun, but air ratchet's do NOT supply enough torque to have broken it. I've used an impact gun on mine and many others. Not with the full power of the gun, but I have and I have NEVER snapped one.

I don't think it's Bilstein's fault. It may have already been weakened from the previous owner useing an impact gun or something else.

I have seen air impacts snap many kinds of strut shafts several times. A low power electric one works fine if you're careful with it.

Call bilstein, have the shock rebuilt. Lesson learned.

Eh the rebuild sounds like a pain in the ***, and expensive just for that one threaded stud. Id give it a shot. Maybe Ill just try trading someone for one of my rear shocks for a front one since I have extras.

Rebuilding a shock is only $95 each, directly from Bilstein.
