Why? I know several guy who have and they all claim to have lowered their times in AX and road course use. I personally prefer no ABS, but if you feel it makes you faster (theoretically it should) - then why not?

Of course - the easiest way would be to buy a IX SE and call it a day. Best of both worlds. . .

I just prefer not having the "interference" from ABS. Some people call it assistance but I believe its more intrusive than helpful.

I'm sure it good for the average person that just mashes the pedal but for those that bond to the vehicle I don't think its better. I guess its an opinion but my opinion is that a good driver will be faster without ABS.

My opinion is different. What you say was true back in the '90's when the ABS really did suck. If one wheel slipped it cut braking off to all the wheels...

The current ABS systems are not that intrusive at all (at least on the EVO, my Honda minivan is another story). I am able to still threshold brake properly without the ABS system kicking in. It saves me from flat spotting my tires when the braking zone surface or conditions are not the same for all 4 wheels. This is for tarmac driving (auto-x & track) in the dry. I also found it not bad in the wet, but tendency of tripping the ABS when there was still a little room left seems to happen a more often. You also do get that little extra level of safety, if and when you get into a situation of using up all of your driving abilities (and it happens to all of us, even you!) which may or may not be as a result of your doing.

However, if you do drive on snow & gravel, I would agree that ABS has still not evolved to be good enough in these conditions. On these surfaces any decent driver should still be able to outperform the ABS system.

Everyone has a different "opinion" on this. I loved having ABS on my first autocross car and it took me a while to get used to the new RS back in '07. The first few events I was locking the wheels up all the time, but I learned to better modulate over time.

However - it has been tested and proven by some top-tier drivers - ABS is faster in an EVO for autocross at least. It may not be so much the "anti-lock" feature as much as the electronic brake distribution feature. If one wheel starts to lock up it can limit brake force to that wheel only while still allowing more force to be applied to the wheels with more traction. It is like traction control for braking.

As said above - the older systems without EBD are not as good - because when one wheel locks up you are done - ABS takes over and cuts braking to all wheels.

Exact-a-mundo. It does what the driver cannot, control individual brake forces.

I've been looking at adding ABS to my RS, but it's more complicated since I don't have ACD. I have to add the wheel speed sensor hardware.

I've been thinking for a couple years now that cracking the EBD programming and tweeking it will be the next leap in performance. It's set up for a 3200# car with skinny, relatively ungrippy tires. I am sure it is not optimized for a 2400-2800# car on 285 width slicks.

I've been working on a BMW rally car lately and reading up on BMW forums. Aparently Bosch has come out with a racing ABS module that is supposed to be the ****.

I yanked it immediately on my rally project b/c I wanted to go to a dual master cyl. setup, but I can certainly see where having ABS can give you a bunch more confidence.

I was driving a buddies WRX out on a lake with WRC ice tires, and the brakes were just flat out confused when I was LFB'ing. If you fed in the brakes painfully slowly they worked, but if you went just a hair too fast, the ABS would engage. Was very hard to balance the car mid-corner with that particular ABS system. I've got no idea how the Evo is in comparison.
