my wheel studs broke!
my wheel studs broke!
i was taking my tires off today to rotate them and i happen to broke all 5 studs off of my front right side, the lugs were over tighten by screw gun..
i just got 20 new studs, but i am a little unsure on how to get the old one out and the new ones back in?
i was told to heat the broken studs up and bang them out, then freeze the new ones for 20mins slide them in and use a nut to screw the stud all the way out.. should i follow this?
also i have rotor sitting in my room rite now would it be easier to just put new rotors in or do i need to reuse the old hub??
any help would be appreciated

dont heat them, you can damage the hub and bearing, just take the rotor off and hit them out with a hammer, when i put new ones in i just snug them with a nut before the wheel and rotor is back on to hold them in place.
dont just snug them up and then use the wheel., horrible advise.
it will take more torque to get them set in place than it will to put the wheel on and torque it down.
dont heat or chill.
there is a thread a few posts down about how to do this. its simple.
jack up car-
remove wheel
remove brake caliper and set off to the side
remove brake rotor
hit old studs out with a hammer one at a time.
scew in new studs with an open ended lug nut.
repeat 20 times
then install rotor
then install caliper
then install wheel
then lower back down
no magic to it. just go do it

If you're doing all 20 studs, read the ARP stud install thread (search "stud install"). There's good info there and I just did all 20 studs myself. You're going to want to kill yourself on the rear because of the parking brake (I think. I had the whole knuckle off doing a crap ton of bushings, though). Fronts can be done easily. Get a BFH and two whacks should get each stud out. To get the new ones in, stick it through, put a couple of washers on it and then thread an old lug nut you dont mind wrecking on there. Then get an impact wrench (I don't care if it's air or electric, don't hand tighten studs) and pull it through with that. After zapping it, check the back of the hub to make sure the lip on the stud is seated flat against it. Front's pretty damn easy to do. Just follow the steps posted above. The parking brake's in the way in the rear and, someone correct me if I'm wrong and missed something, it must come off.
luckybull, can you confirm the parking brake issue? I may have gone about this different due to having the knuckle off.

There is also a tool to press the studs out, reason being beating on a hub/bearing can indent the bearing races. Just an FYI. The tool looks exactly like a ball joint press that you can rent at most auto stores.
I only did the fronts on mine, as they were the only ones that needed spacers. the rears will get done eventually. i already hate having extended studs.. takes FOREVER to change wheels! lol
i cant get the hub off?? does it come off by taking the big gold nut off at the end of the axle??
seem like the axle's moving backwards, but i have it in gear??
need help fast... thanks

Are you talking about the front? You don't need to remove the hub, just the brakes. Axle nut is not necessary to remove. Take off the caliper, rotor and brake shield. I believe you can then bang out the studs.

Never use an impact to put on lugnuts.
You will have to hammer out the old studs and pull in the new ones. Using a lugnut to do so.
