Decision on Tires

I am on tire rack at this moment and I am trying to decide what tires would be best. I know stock are 235/45/17 but I want to go a little wider. I would like to go with 245/40/17 but is that a good thought? Any suggestions?

245/40-17 is a very common size upgrade. Will fit the car/wheels fine. Looking for summer or an a/s tire?

Are these going to be mounted on the stock wheels? I myself am about to order a set sized 245 40 17. They will fit the tire fine, will not rub and will give me a little bit more overall grip in comparison to the 235. The only downside is that its diameter is a little smaller so the car will essentially have shorter gearing by a couple mph. Other sizes to consider are 245 45 17 and 255 40 17. The guess you need to ask yourself what you are planning on using the car for...then we can further assist you with the right tire size.

Well as of right now the car is mainly street driven but not a DD. Does not see the strip very often and eventually will see either auto-x or track events. These will be going on stock wheels but I would like to switch them over to aftermarket wheels once I can get the cash for them. The tires wont get many miles on them thats why i plan to switch them to the aftermarket rims.

Also regarding neals message, I would like summer tires due to the fact that the car does not see many miles except for during spring and summer. It may see some rain but thats if I get caught in it, also it will not see much winter weather unless the roads are fairly clean.

I just switched from a 255/40 to a 245/40 and it's a big difference. Turn in response and acceleration are much improved. I seem to notice the higher rpms at hwy speeds a little but well worth the trade off.

i need some tires for my ix...i have on some 17 x 9 advan rz on stock bilsteins with swift mach lowering springs (0.9 all ova). im pretty much set on getting the dunlop z1 star spec but cant decide if i should go with 245/40/17 or the 255/40/17. i hear the dunlops run kinda wide thats y im leanin more towards the 245's and they would be lighter and cheaper for DD driving altho i kno the 255 are closest to stock diameter! where i live the roads are kinda crappy..so the high stiffer sidewall is wut im going for but i dont want any rubbing issues...wut r ppl running for dailing drivng on 9" rims?

I just bought 255/40/17 Dunlop Z1 Star Specs to replace my old 245/45/17 Bridgestones. Huge difference. Much better grip on off ramps. I am running stock BBS wheels on my IX.

Neal, 245/40/17 or 245/45/17? for daily driving? i would like the extra protection and comfort of the 45 series but not if it will look to 'clumsy' and may cause rubbing issues. btw the dunlop star spec have a stiff side wall right?

245/45 will essentially give you a much taller gearing. Probably good for the highway but will hurt acceleration. Like I mentioned above I went from the 255/40 to the 245/40 and it's great. I did this on the advice of some more knowledgeable guys on this forum and it seems to be a happy medium. More contact than the 235 while keeping the turn-in response we all like in our Evo's. You will rarely if ever see any advantage on the street with the 255. Plus they are a heavier tire as well. Some 245's may only be slightly narrower (tread width) than the 255's anyways.

ok tru true...i just went and looked at the specs on the dunlops z1 star specs...and compared the 235/45/17 to the 245/40/17...apart from the price..is there any benfit of running the 235's on my 9" rim for dd driving..? will they last longer ? i hear that the dunlops run wide, so im wondering if the 235 will fit on my 9" rim flush, and still wear evenly without that stretched look..according to the specs on tire rack..the tire will fit up to a 9" rim! so i mean it should be fine.

im ready to order 2day..just want some final feedback before and as i said my only concern with going with the 245 is the 40 series because i will have more rim protection with more rubber and also not sure howmuch lower the 40 series is gunna make my car (i struggle going over some speed bumps as it is!)

Between the two I would run the 40 series. Tons more people running that size than the 45 series.
