i bought these recently for less than $200 shipped from the private sale section to replace my stock struts n spring w over 100k. but seriously these look worst than my 100k.

38k of full year use (aka winters) can do that.

What year car did it come off of? If an older car - winters/salt had time to set in more. Are the shafts clean (no leaking fluid)?

^This

Assuming the seals arent blown and that is just surface rust rather than being rusted all the way through you should be fine.

I've lived there. Terribly rough roads. I'd look for a set of used MR Bilsteins for $400. Yeah, 2x the price, but better build quality and they are rebuildable.

What?

Its not about the rust, its about the roads driven on. NYC/NJ roads are rough. Bottoming out a strut is what kills it quick.

yeah the rust is more of an asthetic thing, the internals are what really matter, stick them on and you'll know real quick

He's already bought these suspensions and you guys are telling him to buy another set.

OP, just check out the suspensions for leaks and what not and if the rust is just surface stuff, a nice paint job should help. I don't know if there is anyway to test them without putting them on the car, but I was told you can probably push down on the shafts (take springs off) and see if they rebound back on their own. that should kinda give you an idea if they are still in good condition or not.
