rims do scrape the brakes...

Hey, so as its my car we are talking about... the brakes were definitely scraped by the wheels. AS IN BOTH WHEELS. Stock brakes, stock pads never touched yet since i bought the car in april.

I was however, hitting 120-125 on the back straight of streets of willow that weekend and then standing on the brakes only to pitch it sideways for a 5-7 long drift through the skidpad turn. The wheels got so hot the plastic center piece with the mitsu logo popped out!

Anyway, the brakes never did fade but I have a sharp edge along the outside of the rotors because they are worn except from where the pad doesn't touch... on the outside edge. the rotors are maybe 2 mm thinner now but not warped.

I think the heat swelled them or maybe the sustained drifts on the skidpad turn on the track but I have clear as day scrapes arcing on both rotors. I did not hit anything and the car worked pretty good. I was blown away that the brakes worked as well as they did on the track except for this scraping issue.

Going to play dumb and see if I can get it warranteed! Hope they don't notice the gt40 turbo, hardpipe kit, giant avo intercooler poking out front etc.

I did not mod the brakes, wheels etc. although i do have azenis sports on.

mmlvmm aka gt40

Roshan, from Brainstorm, who tuned gt40's car, suggested that the calipers may swell from heat during track racing, and that heat swelling, coupled with the flex from the wheel, probably did the damage.

rims scraping the calipers... continued

In regards to:

I have a hard time beliving a cast wheel is flexing. I mean it would probably break before it flexed.
In regard to the above, metals flex first then then they reach a fatigue point and break so you got that backwards... Anyone who has ever curbed a rim can see the bent rim, not broken. Aluminum is actually pretty soft forged or cast and it will flex given enough torque.

Also, I have identical arcs on both calipers. the odds of a rock or piece something flying between a wheel spinning hundred plus miles an hour are nil. I even took the wheels off and looked - nothing there.

maybe his lugs werent on tight enough causeing alil flexing?
-I use a torque wrench at 90lbs every time...

Heat makes things expand. I think it was the extreme heat and flex combo that did this...

Anyone else seen this?

You're the first I have heard of that has had this problem. It would seem the tire would give way to a slide before the wheel flexed enough to rub so maybe you're on to something with heat swelling. Maybe your lugs are over torqued. Spec is 73-75 ft*lbs

one possibility is that he is making somewhere in the range of 400 or 450 to the wheels maybe cuasing the wheels to flex and scrape the caliper. In regards to mitsu warrenty and track ****em, they better have their lawyers ready if they think that **** is going to fly.

400-450 HP and warranty in the same sentence??

BAAWWWWWWW!!

I know at the Washington GP last year, Doug Fehan (sp?), program manager for the factory ALMS Corvette team was telling our little SAE tour group that they were getting witness marks on their BBS wheels and couldn't figure out why. So they hooked up a video camera in the wheel well to watch what was going on. They found that in that particular case, the wheel was actually flexing enough to contact part of the suspension. They ended up trying some OZ Racing wheels and found that they were like seven times (IIRC) stiffer than the BBS wheels and even a little lighter.

That was a particularly cool tour for me because we were a bunch of engineers and Doug felt free to talk to us in geek speak...

Well, that last post was interesting. My next suggestion was to go to real race wheels. Especially the OZ's . So if what you say is true, then the Enkei's really are not made for any real track time. Time to upgrade for sure. If you're gonn play you gotta pay

I think it's something else. I have tracked this car a few times and not had any problems, and I use race pads so I know it is getting hotter then the others. Also I did not melt the mitsu plastic thing and that seems like it's getting to damn hot. Add the air guides or do something custom to get air to them big reds. Hmm could you take some pics so we can see what it looks like?

brakes scraping cont...

I am waiting to get my car back as it has been on the dyno since last thursday tuning the aem ems... I will take pics and post so you can see the wear to the rotors and arcing scratches on both calipers.

The car will be done around midnight. Roshon at Brainstorm told me so I have the option of picking up tonight late or in the morning. I don't know many other shops that hardcore into the evo that they want to work late into the night just to see how crazy they can tune the car! I will post but we are at 413 whp with a 400 rpm lower spoolup on 94 mix(4 gallons of 100 + 8 gallons of 91) which i always run. I will post for socalevo.net dyno shots af ratio etc

I am bumming the more I think about the brakes. I hope I can get some more out of these brakes or get new ones comped. Maybe new rims too if mitsu will go for it
