Kumho 712s
Kumho 712s
I burnt through the Advans and went with some cheap tires. I have had the 712s on my previous cars and I like them. I got them mounted on the Evo earlier in the week and tried them out in the mountains this morning. They did good.
There is less grip than the Advans, but it was not a problem. They give very progressively, nothing that really caught me off gaurd. In the slalom turns I did not notice a difference from the stock tires. In the 180 degree turns they gave sooner with tire squeeling letting me know grip was being lost. The thing I noticed, was that understeer was not a problem. All four tires seemed to give at the same rate, nothing that was hard to deal with. I also notice that lift throttle oversteer was easier. I could come into a turn too hot and lift the throttle to help the car turn in. Once, I came into a turn way too hot, lifted the throttle, kept the nose pointed in the direction I wanted to go, and scrubbed off some speed to exit exactly the way I wanted to.
Also, the suspension did not feel as stressed as it did with the Advans.
On a stretch of road that is about 30 miles of agressive turns, the tires held together and when I stopped to check the tires, they seemed fine. The sides of my Advans were destroyed by three mountain runs, and these looked fine.
Highway noise is not bad, but I think the Evo is a very quiet car on the highways, compared to my previous cars.
If you want a cheap tire that you can have fun with, these tires are not bad.

I had the 712's on my Eagle Talon AWD and drove it at a 3 day drivers school. I must say they would howl loudly, but they never wavered. I logged 300 race miles on them and they worked great! I could set them at 36 psi and by the end of the session (28 minutes) they would be at 40 psi. Each one. So IMO Kuhmo's are a quality tire for those looking for an inexpensive tire.
