Coil over advice?

Well, I've finally hit the point where I need to buy suspension. My car is up in the 65k range, and has begun to chop tires. AND now I just slashed a sidewall on my on the way out set of tires.

So I figure I need to change the suspension before I chop up a new set of tires.

So what is a good affordable set of coilovers? I want to lower my car I've just been putting it off cuz of the money. I don't need anything wildly adjustable, just some nice coil overs, with hardware to get my alignment straightened out.

I am set up for drag, and have occasionally run autocross.

Im just looking for what you recommend, price, and how happy you are with them.

Thanks,
DJ

if you drag then the D2 coilovers will work well, otherwise the only mid range coilover that I would recommend would be the H&R's.

Most people will advise you to go with a set of springs, and while that will give you good gains for coils I'd recommend Stance GR+ Pro. Sounds like they'd do you just fine.

I would stay away from Stance. I went with their 3-way coilovers, they blew on me...twice. And, Stance refused to warranty shocks that I purchased new, directly from them, and had installed by their own employees in their facility. They wouldn't give me a reason for the denial or anything.

I would recommend any of the budget coilovers...except Stance, that is.

Don't buy "affordable" (cheap chinese) coilovers.

If you're buying go with a brand like KW / H&R / AST and so on... There's plenty of decent coilovers in the 1500-2000 range. The ones in the 1000 range will just make you sorry you bought them and you'll end up spending the 1500-2000 afterwards anyway.

This. My personal experiences with even Apexi and JIC coilovers would lead me to say, either step it up even higher to the $1800 range, or just get Bilstein shocks and good springs and deal with the limited camber adjustment. Some people will disagree with this because their cars have the ride height and alignment they seek for a certain price, but the lower end coilovers just aren't worth buying new in terms of ride quality, valving, and true shock performance.

For a daily driver, I would look at either the Bilstein PSS9, or the AST 4100, both are just sub $2000.. QUALITY coilovers.. one way adjustable, as to not get too confusing on setup. If this is outside the budget, than find a set of either MR or HD Bilstein FPS, and something like GTWORX or Swift sport springs. An alignment can be made with either of these with little issue. I also would suggest talking to GTWORX for your convenience... (Especially since they offer each of these setups).

Your other option is too post a WTB thread... wait 6-12 months patiently for a GOOD quality set of used ASTs, Ohlins, Motons, ETC... I got lucky doing that... not the case for most.

I would also beware of KW V3s, reasons being double adjustability (rebound and compression seperately) can get tedious if you aren\'t a suspension guru, stock rates are not good for the evo, and by the time you get a set valved and sprung properly, you have shocks that are more expensive than ASTs or the PSS9s.

Bassicfun nailed it. ^ It's a slippery slope, but one of the most important things you can ever do for your Evo's performance.

keep in mind if you go with AST 4100s you won't get camber plates with it so thats more money you need to add on top of just the $1800.

That's if you need camber plates, not everyone does. For his uses he would be just fine with reusing the stock tops.

Agreed, and I have BOUGHT ebay plates for $100 shipped for our cars, granted there were not adjustable caster, but did adjust camber (unless someone cared to rotate it, then you'd have caster adjustment!) Upon inspection, they appear to be the same bearing plate that CiroDesign (Rick Jung) uses for their winning design. (Though they often source them from Tein).

Again, this is a baby-step process... get GOOD coilovers (partial to the AST's for a GREAT price, great service from GTWorx, and just as important... CUSTOM VALVED AND SPRUNG!)

I certainly have no desire to install a set on my car.
