Brakes on fire at the track

Hey Guys,

I took my car to the track (streets of willow) for the first time about a week ago. While doing my second session, I had flames shooting out of my right front wheel.

I have an 06 MR. It only makes about 325whp/375lbs and I am on Hankook RS2 tires so I figured that the stock brake pads should be fine.

After pulling off the track, I noticed a LOT of pad material on the wheel. I let the car cool and tried to drive it home but a couple of wheel studs sheared off and I was getting some clinking noises from the wheel well so I had it towed home.

I'll replace the studs with Arp extended studs (I run spacers to clear the brakes and fill wide fenders) and I'll fix the brakes but I was wondering if there might be something specific that caused this issue.

I'd like to track the car again so next time I'll swap in track pads and fluid before I head out. Do you guys think it's just the stock pads or is it likely another issue that I have to deal with?

Thanks!

Sounds like you overtorqued the wheel studs as well. 85 ft lbs is where it should be at and use steel lug nuts not aluminum.

Get some real pads, the stock pads SUCK, and I can not express that enough. My personal favorite pads are Carbotech XP12's. Also you need to put in better brake fluid. I like ATE Super Blue. Try and and you will be back asking what is a better tire to run to keep up with your new brakes lol.

I made 34 passes on the stock pads in 4 hours... I make quite a bit more power than the OP...

Uh are you talking about drag racing?

If not, "Passes" kinda threw me off, instead of something like laps.

Real track, not a strip of pavement.

They were 20 minute sessions. The first one, the brakes did fade but still held ok. The second session, I was out for 10-15 minutes before they caught fire.

I actually did 2-3 laps with them like that as they pulled the wrong car off the track, TWICE, before getting me.

I was probably only on track 5-10 minutes that session before they started flaming.

And please, please, please spend at least a minute online researching what you should do before your next track day before you kill yourself, your instructor or someone else. First thing good instructors do is ask what kind of car they are getting into. What pads are you running, what alignment, what power, etc.

I asked the guys at my local evo meet who track often. They figured I'd be ok on stock pads. I've run stock pads before on other cars and my car really isn't that fast. I realize that track pads will be better for the track (duh!) and I'll use track pads next time I go out.

stock pads should only last for one session. even car magazines only run a few hard laps maybe 10min most and then they stop.

Glad mitsu worked on the X pads. Stock are better than pretty much anything but full race on the track.

You outta consider a set of dtc 70's. they are decently agressive pads.
