If the rim is hitting the caliper then yes you need them.

You'd need to tell folks which wheels you have, their specs, and note the tires. This said, you may want to consider working within the constraints posed by the factory geometry and maintaining the Evo as a great-handling car. Good luck.

The most important things we need to know are:

1) wheel width/offset
2) tire size
3) how low you are

(why was my other post deleted? :S)

Has anyone seen direct handling benefit from spacing out the stock wheels?

Throwing spacers on a car will change suspension geometry. It's not like bolting up wider wheels which extend the wheel in both directions (both towards the outside & inside). Spacers only move the wheel in one direction, so it will make the car feel a bit different. Also keep in mind that you'll be putting extra load on the wheel bearings. To give you an understanding of what that must feel like for them, try doing pushups with your hands angled directly down from your shoulders, & then try spreading your arms as far apart as possible. Kills your shoulders, eh? Evo wheel bearings seem to be pretty strong though....I know in the Subaru world, guys usually don't get very aggressive wheel offsets - wheel bearings go out! If you MUST have them, my suggestion is put the limit at 5mm...& find some that are hub-centric!

I had 5mm on my 03 so the wheel would clear the caliper, with the 5s I didn't notice any difference while driving and i even autox with them. If it had changed the way ghe car felt drove I would have had to change the wheel.

I have 20mm's up front but was rubbing in the rear of my 03 VIII on Konig Heatsink (discontinued) 18x8's; tires: 255/35/18, so i took them off. Now since changing suspension to coilovers, I'll probably be putting them back on. Oh, beware that some shops will not touch your car for wheel, tire, or suspension issues if it has spacers on it. Why, i don't know but they will turn you around as soon as they see them.

WW-GSR explained it above:
