Track day on snow tires

I bought a set of Dunlop "Winter Sport M-2'" snow tires last month from the Tire Rack and used them to drive my Evo from Ohio to Virginia for this weekend's Audi Club track event at Virginia International Raceway. Saturday morning was cold & wet so I left the Advans off & did my first run on the snows. You know, thery were pretty good. I was in the advanced group with instructors driving mostly very fast cars and the Evo more than held its own.

When the track dried and the temeratures went up to mid 40's I left the tires on. Again, they were not bad. The car slid more but it was very progresive/predictable and the slides were easy to catch as the tires were so forgiving. I was able to run with all comparable cars on street tires (no on else was on snow tires), although the cars with full race rubber had a big advantage.

The next day I put the Advans on. There was an improvement in responsiveness and grip, but when they let go, it was much more sudden and less progrssive than the Dunlops. So, I had to be more precise since they were less forgiving.

Conclusion: the snow tires really didn't give that much up to the Advans and were fun to slid around on. I would rather use the Advans on the track, but wouldn't hesitate to use the Dunlops in a similar situation. In addition, unlke the Advans, I could not detect any wear on the Dunlops either.

Wow... that's cool. I got the same tires, and I was impressed with the dry weather performance. But you actually tracked them, and they did well. Very cool. That gives me a lot of confidence in the tires -- I might even autocross on them if I enter a winter series autoX event.

Are yours the standard 235/45R17 size? I got them from Tire Rack about a month ago in that size, and it seems they don't have them in that size any longer.

That's all I need, you beating me on snow tires

I'm liking my P-Zero Nero M+S tires so far, but I really haven't much of an opportunity to see how they handle in the dry. I was quite pleased with their snow performance last Friday though...
