Rack and Pinion needs to be replaced!?! Ya think?

Sooo ya, let's give u a little background on my EVO

- EVO 9
- 59xxx miles
- bc coils
- whiteline roll center, bump steer, etc
- tracked ones at a time event
- park it every winter
- no accidents

So back in fall we installed my coils and I didn't get an alignment and we Cambered it aggressively. Eventually it wore out my front tires so it was bald.

I got new all seasons and got em mounted and I went to get an alignment and they called me and told me that I need to replace my rack and pinion!!!
It's gonna cost $500 for a rebuilt part and $600 labour!
I was quite shocked that a part like that would fail!

I did a search on evom to see if this is a common problem and the only ones I found
Were people who curb there cars. I saw there was a issue over time with the inner and outter tie rods

So is it possible? I was thinking about getting a 2nd opinion!

Thoughts?

Anything is possible but you'd be the first I've heard of.

I don't trust this.

Go to another shop.

And never drive without an alignment after a big suspension change - but that lesson was learned. It ends tires lives like a massive nail to the thread.

Did they give you a reason as to why they believed the Rack and Pinion failed and needed replacement?

Or is it just maybe new ball joints and tie rods need to be replaced? Sounds a little skeptical to me...

Yup live and learn

I know the importance of tire pressure and alignments

No reason as they don't deal with this car
I could see if it was something like that b/c I've seen problems occur frequently with evo's.

Thats what I was quoted from a local repair shop to do it. I guess you have to remove the subframe to replace it (never really looked at it).

I took it to the local mitsu dealer and paid $300 for them to do it, not including my own replacement rack.

Subframe does not need to be removed, simply lowered. Find it hard to believe that it needs replacement. GL.

I was shown where mine was leeking out and it needed new inner tie rods. For me, I know it was needed.

when they leak its rec to get them replaced because they have inner seals and sometimes they start to leak. but as long as check the fluid then its not a big deal. as for the lowering. whenever you change the ride hieght on a vehicle it changes toe ,caster, and camber. toe is what wore out your tires. most people think as long as it drives straight its all good but that is untrue.
