Daily driver summer tires

First I've searched and quite a lot.

I need DD tires that retains the good handling of the evo but not going extreme category as I use the car a lot and even past trough a set of tires in less than a summer. I bought prior and to my fault horrible Kumho SPT than were cheap and made my car handle pretty bad.
I want a tire that is VERY good in the water also as in AA rated.
No track for me this year.
Maybe 1-2X drag, just to put a time

Though of the Star Spec but I would burn them rapidly, weight is high in 255-40-17 and I saw a significant improvement in steering response going to 235-45-17 (weight, less drag, etc)

Going to use 17X9 FN01R-C

I would like maybe:

-Continental DW
-Hankook V12 ( Is the sidewall to soft?)
-Khumo LE? (not a lot of details)
-PS2 ($$$)
-Sumi HTRZ3

I wish for a relatively stiff sidewall but a bit more treadwear, does it exis in that category?

Let me know your personnel experience.

Before I even read the thread I said to myself "DW's".

With the free flip phone you get right now as well its a no brainer. They are also very light tires.

This is the tire I would recommend to anyone for a summer tire that isn't tracking their car.

Lots of good review. Just a bit worrying about sidewall flex. Do you just put 38 pounds too compensate?

It would be great to have a stiff sidewall in the max summer category

The Conti DW's are good tires. I had the on my GTI for awhile. They are good in dry and wet conditions. I even drove them a few times in light snow and they handled well. I went with them because they got great reviews and they were one of the lightest tires out there.

What do you think about steering response? Is the sidewall stiff enough?

Just wondering after reading reviews like that: quote:

I was quite disappointed with these tires. I purchased them to hopefully get a little more life out of them than my previous tires (I have run RE-01Rs and Direzza Star Specs) but they did not succeed. They were worn out in less time than my previous star specs. As for handling, their turn in response was sloppy and in heavy cornering they would roll onto the sidewall if I did not have the tires above 42psi. I would not recommend this tire to anyone. My next set of tires will be a set of Michelin PS2s./quote

Sseems ok for just drag but what about everything else?

Loved my PS2's. Soft sidewall is the only drawback. Having a softer sidewall also makes them extremely lite though, so you have to take the good with the bad I guess. Fantastic wet traction, very good in the dry (no starspec, but still very good), and just really nice to drive on. Very quiet, never got loud even as they wore out, and no cupping what so ever. Conti's will cup, mark my word.

I like my Michelin PS2. They are very quiet and good in the rain. I also cut 1.6-1.5 60ft times at the drag strip with these tires.

Judging by your previous thread, I think you know than many folks would suggest the V12 Evos. You'll probably ask about the sidewall and it's not as stiff as a 046, for example, but it doesn't exactly buckle over itself, either. It's excellent in the rain and has better launch characteristics than a tire with a very stiff sidewall like the 046. Good luck.

Yes many suggested the V12 but I've seen lots of reviews about the same sidewall flex.

I guess with all the info you can't have a relatively good treadwear and a good sidewall.
So go with more track ready tires and good sidewall or something more daily friendly without the weight because of less rienforcement.

Manufacturers need to do a 280 treadwear tire with the A046 sidewall.

<grin> I've seen those reviews, too, some written by folks who wouldn't know the first thing about pitching a car around a corner. Sometimes I can't help myself and post.

Hell, I'd take the 046, period, if they could be had at a somewhat reasonable price.

Not sure about the DW but the DWS sidewall flex is terrible. Car feels like mush..

I have the HTRZ3's on my car. The sidewalls are a bit soft but for the money it's a great tire. I did one autoX on them and once they got hot they were pretty greazy. However, for even spirited street driving temps they perform quite well.

Thanks for your input on thoses.

I was reading reviews on Nasioc and when you mention V12 it is hillarious. "Uncle Scotty" on there hates them with a vengeance it's pretty funny.

I guess it returns to what everybody here wants is near AD06 grip and feel soo I think I'll try Dunlop's even if the don't last all summer.

You peaked my curiosity; I took a quick look. I'm not a member there, so my search results my be a confined:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...1&postcount=16

This is the first thing I saw. I'd say that his assessment is fairly accurate, though 700 miles doesn't sound like a lot of experience with a tire (the second post I saw). You don't race and your on-track involvement seems to be limited to a straight line. I guess I don't get it. This, coming from a guy who shot through his stock Advans in 7500 miles on the street.

Edit: Last summer, I attended the Evolution school. Along with me, there two guys with STi and a few other folks in assorted machines. Both of the STis were shod with the V12, as was my Evo. Both Stis spun out at one time or another. The Evo never left the track. Both of the Stis were wiggling their tails like trout handing on a hook, while the IX remained planted the entire time. Both Stis were considerably slower on the timed runs than the IX on stock Bilstein suspension and Whiteline F/R anti-swaybars. Different drivers, of course.
