20mm Spacers & Handling

I'm thinking about getting some 20mm spacers to make my MR look a little better. Do the spacers or the fact that the wheels are pushed out 20mm affect the handling in any way?

20mm is pretty big for spacers. I'd say if you will be doing any hard driving (i.e. track, auto-x) I would def consider extended wheel studs otherwise you will most likely run into some problems. Do some research on here before making any decisions.

I've been running 25mm spacers for almost 3yrs now, with constant autocrossing. I have had no issues with it. I just make sure the wheels are torqued properly before every event.

^^^^ I guess you've been fortunate. Doesn't happen 100% of the time but just wanted to mention it to be on the safe side.

I've run spacers on my car for 3 years and tracked my car with 25mm spacers. No ill effects.

What you need to know is that by putting a 20mm spacer on your front wheels it changes your scrub radius. It will cause the car to torque steer a bit on throttle and it will cause the car to be a bit more unstable under braking.

I've done it and I do it. Its fine, but know that this is a certain... expected reaction.

If you removed spacers prior to doing an auto-x or track day would a realignment need to be done? I like the idea of 15mm spacers on my car for aesthetics and would think it would be easy enough "if" an alignment wouldn't need to be done every time.

Nope, spacing the wheels doesn't change your alignment. All of the alignment happens pre Hub-wheel interface!

I ran 25mm bolt-on spacers on my Evo X with stock wheels and the car handled worse than without them. I kept them on because they made the stock wheels look great, but removed them when I would do any type of racing.

You'll get more feedback from the tire. If that makes you faster.... then yeah it's better.

True. I should have been more specific. I didn't like the feedback I got with the spacers on. That doesn't necessarily mean it was worse for the car.

if you're considering the wheel spacers without studs (you'll need extended studs) i have a set for sale on the FS forums
22mm hub centric

FWIW, I ran 25mm spacers for years on both heavy street wheels and track wheels. Still turning.

ichiba sells cool spacers 20mm & 25mm that bolt to your factory studs and then your wheel bolts to that.

I suppose it's not ideal due to the amount of mass it adds to the hub... huh.

Those style spacers make me nervous. Anybody have any experience with such spacers? The extra rotational mass is a negative. I assume if you properly clean the mating surfaces and properly torque the spacers to the hubs you should be fine. I wonder how precision designed they are, balance issues?
