Vendors: Wheel Frustration

I don't shop for wheels much nor often. I'm looking into wheels for autocrossing stock class in my Evo 8. I need 17x8 with close to stock offset (dunno what that even is) and light. The driving part here will be cost - not a big budget.

When I hit sites only terse information other than size and perhaps a picture is there for each type of wheel. That's made my search quite frustrating!

I thought I'd try asking vendors via this forum and give that a shot. Given the above, do you folks have recommendations from your respective companies??

Thanks for your time!

The stock wheels are pretty good. How much per wheel are you looking to spend? That'll give me an idea of what to recommend for you.

Volk CE28N is a good option, also SSR GT2. Can't recall if Buddy Club P1QF is available in 17x8 off the top of my head, but that is also a light wheel. All of these are in the area of ~$400 per wheel.

No offense, but I can't justify $400 per corner. What do I have to give up to get down to $200 per corner? If it's just autocross I don't care too much what they look like - there are damn few aftermarket wheels (or stock, for that matter) that I really like the looks of... *shrug*

Not tryin' to be a pain, just on way too much of a budget! Again, I appreciate your time!

None taken. You could get Gramlights for around $200 per, but these aren't an improvement over the stock wheel in anything other than looks. I'll look into this.

Very Simple: Have enough $ to buy cheap rims and slap on race tires. Not rich enough to buy expenisve light wheels. Most of us would rather go with cheap equipment to have some fun than not going at all and have no fun at all.

Remember, not every person is fortunate enough to have sponsors or rich enough to buy whatever they want for the car. It comes down to getting something as oppsed to getting nothing. It is about going out, having fun and being somewhat compatetive as oppsed to staying home.

The general rule for wheels is:

Inexpensive, light, strong. Pick 2.

I've searched hundreds of wheel types, e-mailed a couple dozen vendors, looking for the lightest wheel possible in a 17x8 for autocrossing as well. The only difference is my budget is around $400 a wheel. The only option for you is the Enkei RPF1 (high 14#'s) and the Enkei RPO1 (a couple tenths heavier). The cost is from $200-250 and $150-$200 respectively. A couple of members own these exact wheels for autocrossing. Thats almost a 6# savings per wheel. It's rare to find a light-weight wheel in the 17x8 in the US, over seas is a different story. Another option you may want to consider is going with a 17x7.5, then there is a boat load of light-weight wheels to choose from (low cost) and a few that are in the high 13# range.

PS. the 5Zigen FN01R-C are heavy at 18.8-19lbs. If you can get a set of the race version FN01R in Japan, they weigh in at 14.5#'s. ($650 a wheel)

Not be a smart ***, but I totally agree with this statement. I have to put up with this stuff weekly at the track servicing the CenDiv SCCA.(BFR, RA,GM, Gratt) Quality race tires and wheels cost money. Bottom line is going fast takes money. If you don't have it don't do it, but please don't complain about it. "violins are tuning up"

That said, to the wheels. I did a test fit on 5 different cost effective wheels. NONE fit. The front brakes on the EVO are so big. I have access to Weds for about $1000 per set.

I will check with my other wheel manufacuture on Monday to see if he got his EVO wheels on the boat. They have a few different race wheels from Europe that fit EVO's. The price is around $200 per wheel. But these are "RACE WHEELS." not street wheels that look like race wheels.

Anyone who is interested in these wheels, or race tires PM me. I'm not going to reveal the company at this time except through a PM.
