Sounds like a blown strut.
Look for fluid around the seal. It's pretty easy to take off the strut. I'll typically take it off and disassemble to test the piston. If the piston is slow to react, does not move (sticks), has scoring on the shaft, or rattles - time for new/rebuild (if Bilstein).

You can have a "bad" stut that causes this noise w/o seeing fluid-I did on my drivers side after about 90K miles of tough cleveland driving. While the car handled ok -the noise became really bad and I could start to "feel" it and not just hear it- I tried all sorts of things like new strut bearings but it turned out to be a strut that just didn't have it anymore. Best thing I ever did was to just chage them all out.

I lost the passenger side front strut but it didn't leak - something failed inside. The strut was very stiff in winter and made noise in the summer.
Blew the driver's side on my DSM by backing into a post with the tire while turning. It didn't leak ether. When I grasped and pulled where the rod came out it made a knocking sound with obvious sideways movement.
So, leaking is only one way they fail or get broken.
