Never noticed that, it does say unlimited under width. The Evo X's come with 18's but 8/9 do not so maybe its not legal???

From the rules.
B. Tires may have section widths up to and including the following:
STF, STC, STS, STR (AWD) – 225 mm
STX (AWD), STU (AWD) – 245 mm
STR (2WD) – 255 mm
STX (2WD) – 265 mm
STU (2WD) – 285 mm

Hankook recommends up to a 9.5" wheel on the 245/40/17 R-S3. The wider the wheel the better it seems on the R-S3 tires. I'm running an 8.5" wheel on a 215 (max recommended is 8" wheel) on my E36 BMW and they are awesome for auto-x, minimal sidewall roll with great turn in. The stretch makes me nervous on the street though and I would have rather had the 225 (max 8.5" recommended) but they were out of stock at the time.
I'd probably do the 17x9.5 +38 RPF1 wheels and then use a spacer to clear the front caliper and pick up some front track width while doing it.
