Snow Tire help??

Hey Everyone,

On my 08 Evo x GSR I'm running Hankook's Ventus V12 evo K110 on the stock rims. In Nebraska we do fairly well with the amount of snow we get, I also just bought a house 3 weeks ago so money is a major factor. I was just going to use my stock rims and put either cheap snow tires on or maybe look at decent all season tires. Cheap is differently not how I do things with my Evo but I'm kind of in a bind this season. Anyone have any ideas?? Also I did not purchase the Hankook's they came with the car when it was purchased.

All these tire have a very similar tread design, which is a very good one for snow traction.

General altimax arctic

Hankook Ipike W409

Nokian Hakkapelita 5

Gislaved nordfrost 3

Wanli winter challenger

Price of these 5 tires is all about:
50% You choose the rubber quality/treadwear,
10% Slight tread difference
40% Pay for the name

If your current set of tires are still good, I would look into getting a set of winter tires. I use Dunlop Winter Sport and they are amazing in snow. But if your set will need replacing soon and money is an issue, then an all season set will be your best option.

What do you guys think about Bridgestone Blizzak WS70's?? Reviews say they are good.

or maybe just some all-season ones for cheaper like:

every winter I've ever spent on all seasons, if we got some serious snow, driving in heavy snow was nerve wrecking at best. Of course these were on FWD cars, but the principle remains the same. If you get a serious amount of snow often, I wouldn't look past dedicated winter tires. It'll be a lot cheaper to pay the extra for snow tires, then to get the car fixed when those all season tires fail in more than a light dusting of snow.

Everyone I've ever talked to who ran blizzacks loved them. Never heard anyone talk bad about them.

A dedicated snow tire and awd = awesomeness! The Blizzak WS70 is our best performing snow tire and the least expensive in your 18" oe size. Those are the same tire I run on my Audi and wont use anything else. They are softer handling compared to an all season but offer much more snow and ice traction. If you don't plan on another spring - fall set for next year, then I would suggest an all season tire like Conti's DWS.

Call me when ready!

+1 to dedicated snow tires. AWD is nice for accelerating and all, but it won't do squat for you when you have to slam on the brakes.

Unless you put in the reverse to brake

I'm thinking the best solution for me is to run my Hankook V12 EVO's in the summer switch to Bridgestone's Potenza RE970AS Pole Position(Ultra High Performance All-Season) for the winter then switch back to my V12's and once it is time to toss the V12's I can just use the Bridgestone Potenza's all year round. They look to be good tires.

How much snow do you get in NB? I still think the best course of action of dedicated winter tires.

I agree. In snow, winter tires are night and day compared to all season tires. Save money elsewhere, get good tires.

On my wife's legacy we run the blizzak WS70 and there a great tire. I'm running the general altimax arctic on my legacy and to be honest I don't like them that much. There snow traction is ok but nothing like the nokian hak rsi I used to ride on. I bought them because like you I was short on cash but next go around ill either get some blizzaks or hakka's. I live in Vermont and do allot of back road driving.

Everyones opinion will be different. But even the cheapest snow tire will out perform the best all season tire.
