Coilovers/suspension

So I read through the Suspension threads that talked about coilovers, spring rates, bumpe stops, etc. and that was very very informative. So many smart people here.

I just wanted a quick opinion. Just bought used MR, and the Bilsteins are shot. At least the front ones for sure. This is my daily driver and I can't have "down time". So I was thinking of getting just a set of Megan or Tanabe coilovers (8k/6k) to hold the car for now. I fully understand that these are not good race coilovers...and I would not use them for track purposes...just daily driving.

I don't want to keep driving around on blown Bilsteins. So is this a good option to hold me over for a while? I was then thinking of sending of the Bilsteins to be replaced and fixed etc.....but since I need my car, I need full struts for the car. Preferable new...

I appreciate the opinions and valued input.

Instead of wasting your money on coilovers, you are better off picking up a set of used Bilsteins or even KYB's on here. Swap them onto your car and be done with it. Or better yet, put them on your car and ship out your old Bilsteins to have them rebuilt. Then when you get them back, put them back on and hold onto the other set as a spare or resell them on here.

I am definitely looking into that option as well. So thank you for that feedback. I am actively searching for some used Bilsteins just to get me through for now.

buy KYB's, ship your bilsteins out to get rebuilt

total cost will be the same as buying a used set of bilsteins, but you'll essentially have a brand new set

All advice said is better than buying new set of coilovers as an interim suspension while Bilsteins are being rebuilt.

. . . .or buy a used set with Swift Spec-R's and you'll be set

Sorry for thread jacking to plug in my thread.

The problem with the cheap coilovers is that it's not "IF" it's "WHEN" they blow. You may get lucky, but a large percentage of the cheap crap sold fails within the first year. You might not have full height control with bilsteins and springs but at least they'll last and you can always keep them as spares if you decide to buy something nicer.

And to be honest, 95% of people with coilovers never adjust the height after the first time because that means a new alignment.

You can get a used set of KYB shocks for really cheap. I sold my old set for like $350 shipped and they were in awesome shape.

so many choices. the price of bilsteins and springs...or even just used bilsteins are about the same price as some megan racing coilovers. Yes I understand they aren't great...but for the same price why not buy some coilovers while the bilsteins are getting fixed?

This is all great info guys. Thanks!!!

Because the cheap coilovers you'll get for the same price as Bilsteins won't ride as well as the Bilsteins.

What is the appeal of a set of cheap coilovers? I just dont get it...who cares about height adjustment when in reality you will probably set it once and then forget about it. As for the 32 or whatever number of dampening adjustment, does that really matter either when every setting sucks?

If you want to get some coilovers to impress your friends then go for it. If you prefer to improve your cars handling and ride then get your Bulsteins fixed and be done with it.

Please know I would not get coilovers to impress my friends This is my 4th evo, so I have an idea of what I am doing. I was saying that I might just get the colovers to have and use while the bilsteins are being fixed.

A lot of the used bilsteins or replacement struts that I have seen or been offered to me are about the same price as new coilovers. So if I am going to spend the same amount of money just for replacements, might as well get new coilovers and get whatever use I can out of them until then put the Bilsteins on when then come back fixed.

I appreciate all of the feedback, because I am learning a ton about suspension and what is the best ride etc. I won't be tracking this car for a while as it has many items that need to be fixed before I can even take it to that level. Just need new suspension to hold me over for about year.

But thank you for all the input. I appreciate it, and I will continue to research and find the best possible solution which may include some used bilsteins with swift springs

I guess there is no real appeal either way. The biggest thing...and I know this is silly and probably **** retentive...but new parts give me the peace of mind. Yes the Bilsteins will give better ride and provide same handling if they have swift spring. Plus it's lowered and gives a better stance with the handling. But buying used suspension gives me doubt..ya know? How long have they really been on the car? how abused? Will they go out within 1 month?

And for anyone who knows me personally....I really do have the worst luck. That is no joke. I should name myself Murphy's Law So the "new" gives me the peace of mind.

So there is some of my half @$$ logic.

And I know you aren't being disrespectful. I really do appreciate the help and info.
