Kuhmo MX first impressions

I just realized how stiff the Advan sidewall really is. I got a screw in my tire last week and found my tire presure at 12 PSI. I could barley tell the tire was low! Since I was just about due for new rubber (6500 miles) I put on some Kuhmo MX 245/40/17's. When I saw the front tire, I took the pressure immediately. It looked low, but had 31 PSI. I guess I was used to seeng the advan with no side wall flex.

The MX is not as zippy/quick in steering resoponse as the Advan. Yes the tread is full and still a few PSI low, but it is obvious the sidewalls aren't as stiff as the Advan even though the sidewall height is slightly shorter. The MX was quieter and softer ride. My Advans had some interesting wear patterns so they may have been louder than when new. I havne't had a chance to push the tire hard yet, so my hopes are still high. I have heard good things about this tire.

I have the MX's in a 235/40 18, but I haven't had them mounted on my Volks yet. Just looking at them, they look similar to the Advans. I don't think you can get another tire that will match the Advans performance unless you want to pay for it or just buy the Advans again which is something I'll never do. I'm not into spending that much money for tires every 8 months.

Completely different kind of tire. Very hard, if not impossible, to compare them against each other.

I've noticed my Advans are beginning to develop wear patterns too. The outside blocks aren't flat from front to back and they are getting pretty loud. At a meet in Maryland over the weekend I looked at all the tires on different EVO's and the pattern seemed to be happening to other cars too. Didn't see it on the cars with winter tires. I've been rotating my tires at 3,000 mile intervals - car has 7k now and the rotation doesn't seem to be preventing the odd wear or the high road noise. The tires are the loudest thing on th car, more than the driveline or exhaust. Better at high speeds, pretty bad below 60 mph.

I dont have first hand experiance with MX's on an EVO as my RS is on order and not due until June, but I HAVE driven my Celica GT and a Suby 2.5RS with MX's on them. I really liked the tire IMO, a lot of local auto xers use them in the Rocky Mountain region as they are a decent season tire for the price and performance, and they are lighter then Falken Azenis tires. They did wonders for my Celica, and the Suby was a monster through the slaloms. I have found that you need a bit higher pressure vs some of the other standard autox tires to really get the full effect, in the 2.5 we were running around 38/40 front and 35/37 rear.

those patterns are emerging on the evos possibly from misalignment from the factory or simply because we evo's take corners like nothing else

My odd tread wear was from track use. The weirdest thing to see was the second row of tread blocks in was worn to the wear bar on the outside, but had nice depth on the inside. And that is on one tread block! Of course the outer edge of the outer tread blocks were destroyed. I rotated mine all around including a rim flip. After all the track days, I added some more neg camber which should help.

BTY, the "low" looking tire that I mentioned in the original post was a fluke. They look fine in my garage (still at 31 PSI). There must have been a bump in the parking lot of the tire dealer or somthing.

The MX is a nice looking tire. The 245/40 also seems like a nice fit on the car and rim.

Have any pictures? Possibly rollover from too wide a tire on too narrow a rim?

my advans were the same way...inside of the tread pattern was fubar but the outside was great. Very odd...was rotating every 3k miles and even had an alignment done...but I think the alignment was too little too late.

Have some Perilli PNero Zero M&S now.

Are you asking me for pics? The weird tread wear was the stock Advan on the stock rim. The 245 Kuhmos would be happier on a 8.5 rim. However they only go beyond the rim width a tiny bit.

Do you have any pics of the tread pattern itself, for both the wierd pattern on the advans and the MXs?

The tread pattern looks alot like the Advan, but the middle goes to almost a directional pattern. When I got home I'll try to take some pics of the tires. Mine are not on the rims yet.
