255/40/17 fit on a 8.5 or 9

well I want to go with the 255/40/17's so do I need a 9 inch wide rim or can I do it with an 8.5 I will most likely never go over that size so if I can stretch it I guess I could...

You can go with a 8.5 but 9" will support the tire better on the track. You will likely have to do fender rolling etc to make it fit properly. 17 x 9 x 35-40 offset depending on the wheel and flaring fenders can work. I run ce28's with 255 40 17 pilot sportcup r compounds for the track. I had to flare/ roll the fenders to make it fit but the handing is awesome. Running rre modified and tuned jic coilovers and it works.

id say 8.5....if the tire makes a /-----\ shape....the sidewalls dont work at full potential.....lessening your handling and your ride quality....

I'd also say 8.5 would be about perfect. I run 255/40 Victoracers on my stock rims which are 8" wide and they fit nice and work great.

I just mount and installed the 17x9 advan rg (35 offset) with Kumho 255 40 17. No rubbing, no need to roll the rear fender (close call though). the car is lowered and corner weighted with JIC with me in it. -3 camber in front and -1.6 in the rear. I'm happy with the perfect fit! I will try to post some pics later.

No need to modify the fenders for me. It really depends on the tires. Here are some pics.
