When to change front brakes!
When to change front brakes!
I have 17k miles on my EVO and the brakes just recently started squeaking a little. If I look inside the rotor I see there is brake pad left but the squeaking has got me worried. Is this a sign they are going bad?
I do not race my EVO nor do I brake really hard. I just want to know what to listen for before I tear up the rotors.

I have 31K plus miles on my EVO and I'm still on the stock brake pads, at the 30K check I had the rotors resurfaced, but they said the stock pads were only worn down about 50% (yes, I do a lot of highway driving). The stock pads tend to squeal from time to time, but that haven't really done it in a long time. Most brake pads have wear indicators on them to let you know when the pads are past due to be replaced. Most wear indicators make the noise when you are not stepping on the brakes, (I'm not sure if the EVO's are this way as well).
Personally, if you think the noise is not normal, then take it in to the dealer and ask them to check the brakes, see if they come back that they need to be replaced, if so, ask them why they suggest that, then go and get a second opinion. Just remember, a lot of people experience noise from their EVO brake pads, so it could just be normal.

I changed mine at about 28k. When I looked at the front pads through the wheel spokes, outwardly the pads seemed fine. But I was getting a new scraping/squealing sound that was bothering me. So I took off the wheel and removed both pads from the front wheel. The outside pads was fine. But the inside pad was worn down to the backing plate. So the insides wore more quickly than the outside.
You may want to remove the pads and eyeball BOTH of them before concluding that your brakes don't need to be changed yet.
