Hi agn!
Thank you for this valuable, accurate input!
One thing people who take wheel weight into account often forget is indeed the fact that the main part of the wheel's weight is further away from the center, reducing the car's performance grip-, acceleration- and braking-wise.
Keeping all that in mind, I have now fitted Speedline Corse 17 x 8 wheels to my Evo (7.8kg instead of the stock 10.2kg in 17 x 7.5), reducing overall unsprung weight by over 10kg, in fact close to 11kg. Indeed, I also changed the wheel bolts to magnesium parts. The difference in weight for 20 bolts is over 1kg!
Thank you for explaining the possible reason for the difference in weight between the quoted and effective weight; however, the weight of 7.3kg I quoted was quoted to me by Xtreme Automobiles (former Ralliart UK) customers, who, I find, should get quoted the weight of the wheel actually fitted to their car. I'll check with them

how come ferrari's, porche's, lamborgini's, etc.....each very world reknown performance cars/supercars, have 18's and 19 inch wheels?? the new bmw m3 also came out with 19inch options ,and the 330 came out with a performacne model that includes an 18inch (upgrade) over the original 17's? I also look at race cars and they genarlly all have big wheels. is it only becuase of fitting the brake? any word?
Superstar,
Quite often it's just for the looks, but those huge wheels do not help the car dynamics at all.
So when manufacturers decide to fit 18" or 19", in order not to affect the dynamics negatively, they are forced to fit VERY LIGHT (i.e. VERY EXPENSIVE and VERY FRAGILE) wheels.
In some cases (like the Europe-only Audi RS-4 18" wheels) it has become a complete nightmare for the owners. I know people who have gone through 5 sets of rims already...
Weight savings become much more important in larger diameter wheels, because as most of the wheel's weight is concentrated in the external part (far away from the center) the momentum increases dramatically.

Absolutely spot on, RS2-TME (as usual)
Another thing is that manufacturers have started to compete with the aftermarket suppliers now, fitting big wheels (which a lot of people simply WANT, for aesthetic reasons), clear blinkers and the like from the factory.
The M3 with 19 inch wheels is a complete joke from Germany where wheel sizes follow the saying "the bigger, the better".
Supercars need 18 inch to make the brakes fit.

Thanks Claudius.
By the way, now that we are talking about huge 18" and 19" wheels...don-t forget F1 cars use 13"!!!
Claudius, I'm loking to buy a second set of wheels, and I am still undecided about 17" or 18".
Are you happy with the Speedline Turini 2120? I hate cleaning my thin-spoked TME wheels, so I'm inclined to fit Enkei-type 5 spoke wheels.

Claudius the Speedline Turini 2120 is a magnesium wheel right? I've heard good and bad about magnesium compared to just forged aluminum. I like the look of the 2120, but I am not sure if the white would look so good on a silver Evo. I saw pics of your car, but I am still undecided. I like the gunmetal look on a silver car.
Do you have any pics and also the original pics of the wheels you first posted aren't showing any more. Have any links with their pictures?
I noticed you live in Europe. When the time comes for me to buy nice wheels, can you help me out? Maybe we can meet when I get the Evo8..

I'm rally considering white rims for my red car
I think ralliat has the white enkei tarmac somthing. Just want something strong and light for the track. I'm thinking better resale in the states for volks?
On my up and coming silver Evo I am leaning towards the OZ Superleggaras in 18" (they are light and not as expensive as Volks) or Volk TE37s in gunmetal. The only issue I have with the Volks is they are super expensive!!! I like the multi-spoke look like the OZ, but I really want a forged wheel.
The superleggera in 18 is a very good chice for the evo as they are very light, around 8kg, they look nice, they are forged aluminium and they are not expensive.
The ENKEI wrc tarmac evo in 18 that I have are 9.6kg in 18, they should be very strong and are slightly lighter then the standard wheels. They look very good on white and red evos.
The speedline 2120 turini are fluoformed aluminium, they weight around 9.5kg in 18, should be strong and are not too expensive.
The magniesum version is called 2021sc, weights 7.8kg in 17 but they are very expensive compared to the weight.
The volk te37 are avaible in aluminium, 7.8kg in 18, and in magnesium, 5.8kg in 18. They are very expensive, but are very light and very strong.
