MMCS + 650Watt speakers = quiet?

Hi all,

Just got my X MR on Friday w/ the technology package. The stereo does not turn up loud at all. Seems like FM radio is a little louder than MP3, CD, or Sirius. Regardless, none turn up loud enough (Wish it would go to about 50 instead of 45). I've even bumped Bass, Mids, and Treble up a few notches to try to get a little louder.

My stock speakers in my old IX GSR pounded w/ a Pioneer deck (just the mosfet, no other amp) compared to this thing. Did I just pay $2550 for a **** sound system or is there something possibly wrong with mine?

Also, when I plug my zune into the input jacks using the zune RCA cable from micro$oft AND I plug in the charger, a high-cycle hum comes in through the speakers... audible over the music, even when the stereo and zune are cranked.

Any ideas?

And don't give me any of that hearing loss crap... I play in a band and am already deaf... this stereo can't do any more damage than my 300watt guitar amp already has :P

Thanks to all for any info!

GSR with SSS that I had the Nav added to (so it's likely similar to what you've got).

It gets loud enough to be annoying. From quietest to loudest: DVD -> Sirius -> CD -> FM (I've not tried aux).

With the zune plugged into the power charger you are getting a ground loop, which is causing the hum. Likely the zune is using a common ground which is attached to the ground on the charger (lame design for an audio product). There isn't a really clean way to deal with this unfortunately.

I can talk over mine when it's cranked. That's not annoying, it's ridiculous. Those speakers can perform at much higher volume than the deck maxes out at. I'm not looking for a pounding trunk-shaking sub (I actually turned the punch down a few notches), but rather a $2500 stereo that can actually perform like one.

Just being facetious about the half deaf thing. Everyone that's been in the car agrees that the stereo is too quiet when at full volume.

From the reviews on the forums, the rockford system isn't the greatest,
but the other accessories of the SSS package make up for 2k price. (Wing, HIDS, etc)

Why don't you try taking it back and listening to the same system in other SSS equipped evos. If theirs sounds better, something is wrong, if not, its just how it is.

Alot of the members here have upgraded just their speakers with focals and seem very happy with the results.

I'm not against swapping the speakers, but I want to confirm it IS the speakers and not the MMCS head unit before doing anything. I have a feeling the head unit is the limiting factor here... Can anybody comment on that?

the HU might have a low voltage preamp out to the 7 channel amplifier that they use in the system (the tweets are amped separately from the mids) as compared to the SSS HU.

Honestly I don't crank the stereo much. I think I normally listen in the 20-25 range and it's lower when the wife and kids are in the car.

No wife & kids here. Really though, I've never had a car with a stereo this quiet and it's the first time I've ever opted for the 'premium' sound package. I was happier with the dinky stock HU and speakers that came in my IX GSR compared to the sound this car is putting out. If I set mine to 20 it's barely audible over wind noise.

I get the same with an iPod when charging. If I leave the Aux cable unplugged, no Ipod or anything charging, and select AUX, I get a whistliing and a hum among other distorted sounds.

Same here! Sounds like a hard drive click.

...I certainly don't find the system to be too soft. I rarely if ever turn it over 15 or so. Please don't take this as an insult but have you had your hearing checked lately? Having studied audio engineering, a lot of people suffer from hearing loss due to loud music, (not just those that play in bands, headphones cranked too loud etc.) If I remember correctly, 100dB for about an hour is enough to cause permanent hearing damage.

P.S. random trivia - lots of symphony musicians suffer from hearing loss...and you thought rock bands got loud :-)

On the way home I looked and with passengers we were listening at 14 and when my car pool got out I put it up to normal volume and it was 18. This is listening to Sirius.

If you're having to listen to it at 40 you're either deaf or there's something wrong.

Get a Ground Loop Isolator from radio shack, one will set you back about $17. This will help with the hum.

Yeah it's called alternator whine and I've got it in my MR, with NAV and foscrap system. It's understanble given the poor factory grounding and especially the normal wire preamps (otherwise known as RCA cables). Swapping the HU with one with actual RCA outputs will help; I'm going with fiber optic digital cables cause I'm real **** about noise
