Poor sirius sound quality
Poor sirius sound quality
Does anyone elses satalite sound quality suck? The music chanels all sound like a bad mp3 download (muffled or garbled). I rode in my boss' charger the other day and his sirius radio sounded crystal clear. I dont listen to the music channels much cause they just dont sound good. Regular radio sounds fine, CD sounds fine MP3 sounds fine.
Sirius heavily compresses their signal- this is why the sound is so poor. I'm looking for ways to replace the Sirius tuner with a proper iPod adapter or HD Radio adapter when my six months trial is over.
Yep Sirius sounds terrible no matter what you use. I had OEM mopar in my SRT-4 and it was bad and via Pioneer kit with Pioneer deck in my MR2 and it sounds bad. It also sounds bad with my brother's Bose factory system in his audi. As mrMTB said it's very compressed. It's pretty disappointing that local FM reception sounds far better but with their cash flow problems I doubt you will see any improvements for a while.

mine is awful aswell. I have a IX with the stock radio with a sportster 5 and the direct connection. thinking of ditching it and getting HD radio.

It's a fact that while sirius and xm are digital signals, the quality of sound from a perfect FM signal, is actually a higher caliber. While the digital signal rids you of static up&down, it replaces that with a signal that may not be as consistent.
However, The way you make it sound, is as if you're listening to a very low quality mp3 or something (i.e. 24k mono). IMO, there's something else wrong. I'm picky about my music quality, but I'll listen to sirius/xm over AM/FM, any day. I'd just rather have a consistent signal, than one that sounds great for a few seconds, then sounds like **** when I cross under a power line.
I have the nav in my new Evo, and had the nav in my GTS. They both sound great when it comes to sirius, but within the limitations of the sirius technology.

Its not just a crappy signal here and there. As long as you have full view of the sky you should be able to get high quality music. THe sound we are hearing is so muffled and compressed that its almost as if you were listening to music underwater. The tones get mixed together and its just all around crap. My FM stations, mp3 CD's, Regular CD's and Ipod all sound 100% better than that.
