My tweeters are both crackling like crazy. I'd like to replace them. Will any tweeters drop in or do I need to order them from Mitsu?

 

Try looking in the for sale section. Tons of people have replaces their RF system. I'm sure you could find some used tweeters for much cheaper then what you would pay from mitsu.
Or are you looking for aftermarket stuff?

 

I'd rather replace them with aftermarket tweeters. If I blew out the RF's once, it seems logical that I'd blow them out again.

 

Yeah, you can replace the RF tweeters with aftermarket..

however, you'll need to make sure you get the correct size, impedance, power handling, and then hope the RF amp's built-in crossover matches up.

Not that I'm aware of. Think I saw where someone used the tweeters from a Focal set they had, and it worked okay. Seems most people replace the whole component speaker, which would probably sound better since the tweeter and woofer will be matched.. though you'll still have to deal with the RF amp's crossover, and hope it splits at the right frequencies.

From what I've gathered, the stock RF tweeter is 4ohm (2ohm for the woofer), handles ~30RMS watts, and is slightly larger than an inch in diameter. Also, the signal for the woofer and tweeter are split at the amp, so you probably won't need or be able to use an outboard crossover (using one would create a steeper and more abrupt slope, and the tweeter/woofer would sound less "blended").

Keep in mind that some of that info could be wrong, though.. it's just what I've seen posted.

There's not a whole lot of tweeters that are sold individually, so maybe just start out with trying something a little cheaper..

Think Alpine just began selling single pairs of tweeters, as well.. but I didn't see them listed.

Also, it might be a good idea to find a tweeter that has a lower frequency range. For example, if the RF crossover cuts around 4000Hz, then a tweeter that's only rated down to 6000Hz would still be receiving a signal that is too low for it to handle.. whereas a tweeter rated down to 3000Hz would have the signal within it's range.

 

the tweeters on my Hertz HSK165 components dropped right in, same screw holes and everything. as far as wiring them to the oem amp, I'm not sure if it would push them enough. I have 240W RMS going to EACH front component.
