ECUTEK or Cobb AP?
cobb is an interesting product. Its not found on most high HP evos because cobb was more for the subaru guys.
Evo 8 and 9's had bad luck with the cobb ap but for the X it seems to being doing good.
personally i would go ap because you have the power of switching maps with a switch of a button. Ecutek and cobb ap are about the same price only thing is the cobb can be adjusted by you and you can also share maps with others
unless you can wait for ecu flash. Who knows how long it will take for ecuflash to catch up where the cobb is.... but when it does catch up (and it will) ecuflash is amazing. Theres mods like the tephra mode or map switching available for the 8 & 9. Im sure something will come out for the X.
Both ecu flash and cobb ap allows you to datalog and get maps from tuners over email. A custom tune on a dyno is always reccomended but when youre like me on a distant island with no tuners or awd dynos then you got no choice but to do it over the internet.

^^^I say AP mostly cause it can store several maps alone. Daily driver map, Road Coarse Map, Vallet Mode. Drag Strip Map, Stock, Etc. I know I would like to have a little more aggressive map when I do certain things or throw some 100+oct in the car to play around. I do think Eccutek is a great product, but you are stuck with on map after you get tuned.

I am both an Ecutek and Cobb dealer. Tuned both, and the Ecutek is a very good product.
Perhaps not the best for people who want to mess with the tune themselves, but very good. Gets the jo b done, Ecutek is also a very reputable company and support their software and tuner network very well.

I agree 100%. I am not currently an AP dealer, but I have been in the past. ECUTeK works very well on the EVO X, and has alot more seat time with the EVO X ECU at this point.
another benefit of the ap over ecutek is the ability to resell the ap unit if you are going back to stock. There is a market for used ap's so you can recoup some of the money on the ap.
I don't really see the debate. Don't get me wrong, I think both are top notch products, but it seems to me you get a little more for your money from the AP with having actual hardware. Both are awesome, both will work, but to me you mind as well get a piece of equipment with your money. Neither will outperform either with proper tuning from what the results have shown (dyno graphs), so AP edges it out. I plan to order one next week
Another thing I forgot to add was i could see customer service or support being an issue or reason to get one or the other. But from all my research I have determined that is also a wash, because by the looks of it both have great service.
I think an easier way to decide is Pick a tuner and ask them if they are capable or what do they feel more comfortable tunning with....
then again you got skillful guys like chris from ams who pretty much can adapt to whatever he tunes with (sorry chris to throw your name out there)

I would agree with that for sure, you are limited to your tuners knowledge and comfort level. Most of the tuners I have ran into however do both, even the ones who suck. But again, if your tuner wants one over the other, just go with it and you will more than likely be happy either way.

nah im in the same boat i cant decide which to go with the only reason i would favor cobb ap is cause you can do maps over email (not as accurate as a custom dyno tune) but for unlucky guys like me i dont want to send my ecu back and forth when i change my setup just risk factor and shipping from hawaii is damn expensive...
but if i did live close to AMS i might be all over that ecutek
I am reading this and I am in amazement.
Ecutek you get your car tuned by a pro for $750, on a dyno with dyno time. It all costs money.
Copp AP, $695 or so, plus pro tuner and dyno time. So in the same region, good deal also.
Now There are certain advantages to having the Cobb Hardware including the ability to clear check engine lights, check trouble codes, switch maps on the fly, and much more which is usefull for a user that would like to tinker. Plus there is an actual peice of hardware that you own, vs a virtual license stored on the ecu.
Those maps you download cannot be compared a to a custom tune and also may not even apply in certain situations where the modifications go beyond the scope of what is offered in a mail in.
The way I see it with either solution a custom tuned map on the dyno is going to cost some money, both have through the mail solutions that are cheaper. You cannot compare a mail in to a custom tune, that is the whole point of my arguement.
