Fuel Cut? What happened?

Miles on the car: 1500
Mods: AMS Test Pipe, AMS Exhaust, AMS IC, Nisei 1 pc Upper FMIC

Long story short:

25* outside.

I was driving on the highway, dropped it to 4th gear, accelerated, and got to about 5500 rpms where the car suddenly felt like it hit a wall. It then shot a flame.

I decided to see if it was a fluke so I floored it again a minute or so later in 4th. Same thing.

I have never had any problems like this before, but the only times I've driven the car hard its been above 40*.

I don't believe my car has the factory flash (even though the dealer said it did) since it still has problems with partial throttle boosting, etc. I didn't plan on getting a tune until I got my intake in and put my downpipe on. I don't have enough time with work to make an appointment at the dealer to get the flash done.

Do you guys think this was just fuel cut due to the cold? If it is, hopefully my car will be fine.

On a side note I also gave my steering wheel its first scratch with the zipper on my coat. Anyone have any fixes for this?

Likely boost cut from the colder weather and denser air.

Yeah I was just reading about that. I guess I'll stick to leaving it in storage for a bit longer. Kind of lame.

Needs more flames though.

Shouldn't the ecu be able to adjust for it since I only have minor bolt-ons?

Yes and no. With the "bolt-ons" you have pushed the motor out of the range of the ECUs set safety check and hence the limitations. Mitsubishi has now moved into a realm similar to Subaru where they must be tuned to make the most of what the car has to offer. If not tuned, the car generally will run poorly.

I'm sure if you get a good tune you will be surprised at how well the car will drive and run. Quite honestly with a modern vehicle a tune should be one of the first considerations when modifying the volumetric efficiency of a motor.

Thanks,

may sound like a silly question, but was your gas tank almost empty or less than half?

At the track, my x needs a full belly... anything less than 1/2 tank and it will fuel cut/starve itself at high elevation drops/speed, sweepers etc. The gas sloshes around and the pump fails to pick up gas... Its a common reported problem specific to the X...

Just throwing it out there as a possibility.

I know it will. I'm just waiting until I have enough time away from work to install my downpipe and go get a tune from AMS. Since its "busy season", I am not able to. As soon as April 15th comes around, I definitely will be making an appointment to go get a tune. I'd like to get the TSB reflash first though, as it would be a better starting point for the tune.

The gas was at exactly half.

Like Scott said, its only boost cut. Not only will a tune take it away, it will make a ton more power with those mods.

I know a tune will fix things, and give me more power. I just am not able to do that at the moment.

I'm also having problems with partial throttle boosting. Car feels like it cuts out and then goes again. Kind of lame in a brand new car.

Are there any other tanks we could use so that it would prevent this?
