Limp mode [merge]

i'm experiencing this problem with my tuned evo X. Performance upgrades include the EcuTek upgrade, turbo back exhaust, K&N drop in filter, Samco inlet hose, Apexi AVC-R valve controller.

My experience is that when i'm in 5th gear at partial throttle, around 3800 RPM the car goes into limp mode. I then have to pull aside and switch off the car, then turn it back on and the car apparently comes our of limp mode but the check engine light is still on.

I believe that at this point the car is not back to normal mode and is still protecting itself. I've read that one possible cause of this could be the Air/fuel ratio.

Any help here would be appreciated.

This sounds like an overboost condition. The ecu has boost limits and time limits set to throw that code and enter limp mode. This will tend to happen in 5th gear because there is the most load on the engine and the peak boost will hold longer (and probably surpass the ecu's set time limit for over boosting). You should have your code read somewhere though to make sure what the problem is. It is possible for it to be a lean reading code but I would bet on the overboost. This might require you to adjust your boost controller or have your tuner adjust those boost limits on your Ecuteck tune.

It's not over boost per say but rather exceeding the trustfull airflow checks tables in the rom. If you have the compensation maps enabled on the avc-r you can dial back the boost at higher road speed OR go back to your tuner and have them re adjust the trustful checks table.

But, to be on the safe side you need to pull the codes and make sure it's not something else, though from your description I would assume it's simply that your making full boost (or near full boost) at partial throttle in the higher gears.

I'm having similar issues...like mad VIII stated...a few of the tables need to be re-adjusted. Many tuners are still working on finding and utilizing all of the boost control tables.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Try going back to your stock bov. Same thing was happening to my friends X and that completely fixed it.

I agree, many people are having problems with atmosphere venting BOVs. Most get the CELs when they drive up hills in a high gear and slightly let off the accelerator.

I think its compressor surge. I had an RFL BOV venting and was getting horrible surge so I decided to recirculate it and havent had any problems since.

a guy in socal was having the following issues after he got a tune:

Limp mode
no heat unless turned all the way up in the cabin

here is what he found out:

there's too big of a hole on the 02 spacer, thus causing too much exhaust flow screwing things up.. plugged a different spacer on with smaller hole and the problem went away. I'm gonna continue to monitor my car

Are you talking about putting a spark plug anti-fouler between the o2 sensor and downpipe?

Combination of the boost controller settings and the EcuTek tune.

guys thanks so much for the great responses.

The problem has been solved. My tuner spoke to EcuTek and they confirmend that this problem exists with some of their configurations. They have released a new ROM update and they reviewed my file. When my tuner uploaded the file which included the newer ROM and and the new adjustments, the problem disappeared.

Thanks again people

I had all the same problems that everyone is talking about my car would go into limp mode, but another problem that I was getting was the car would hold at 2000 or so rpms sometimes. When it would do that then the car would not get the weird fluttering sound followed by going into limp mode but. the only way to stop the car from holding at 2000 rpm at the moment is to cycle the key from the on position to off then back to on, then it was normal. So basically it would only do one thing and it would then cancle the other out. I was using a Greddy RS bov and it was 100% vent to atmosphere, but have not made a reirc hose for it and ironically enough it has quit cutting out but still gets stuck at 2000 rpm sometimes. some times the limp mode deal was so bad that it happened the other day (before I made the recirc hose) ^ times in a half hour, but hopefully it is fixed now.

Question LIMP MODE!! service engine soon light codes mf1, p1241, u1417 & c1216 multiple mods

OK.. Here is the problem. Driving on the highway in 5th gear most of the time around 80 mph , car falls in to limp mode. The dash lights up - service engine soon/service required / ASC turns off.. DIES completely and have to stop and restart the car! hazards on! On long Island , in NY traffic..... NOT fun! I have a few mods- intake, uicp, down pipe/cat-back AND the notorious HKS BOV, ok!! ok! I know what your thinking,...

"this guys is running a vent to atmosphere bov on a evo! Theres the problem!!"

but heres the thing mine is re-circulated just like the factory. and I have been running this set up for over 6 months and had no problem up in till the last month or so!
so I called the boys at Cobb tuning today cause who else would know best and the dude I had on the phone was really kool and tried to give me some ideas on what the problem might be.
1. A bad MAF sensor or the MAF sensor not agreeing with the aftermarket intake . told me their shop car did the same thing- so it could be the problem I'm having and
told me I should hit all you guys on the forum for other ideas before I spend the time putting all my facotry stuff back in , taking it to the dealer or just spending the $160 on a new MAF sensor.
so any ideas why this is happening to so many evos wit intakes/bov just intakes or just bov's! friggin pain in the backside!! and not fun

I cleared the codes this time but have taken it to once before because my scanner only gets 2 codes .
codes are; MF1. P1241. U1417 & C1216
MF1= MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR. INACCURATE DATA.
P1241= TORQUE MONITOR. C1216= TORQUE REQUEST DENIED
U1417= IMPLAUSIBLE DATA RECEIVED

Do you have the intake shield?

And if the MAF is bad, why would you buy one and not just go back to stock and let mitsu replace it for you

And get rid of that junky BOV. (had to say it)
