ECUflash and WORKS flashed ECU

I have flashed Evo Xs 45 times, test flashed Evo 10s another 45 times, and read Evo X ECUs another 5 times. In total I have used ECUflash on Evo 10s about 95 times.

Today a friend of mine wanted me to read his WORKS flashed ECU. Boy was that a mistake.

The moment I try to read the rom, ECUflash gives me a J2534 error and closes the interface. The car stays in flash mode with the fans engaged and the dash lit up. Needless to say the car will not start.

So we flatbed the car to the shop that uses WORKS flashes and hardware/software interface.

They connect their hardware and use their software to flash the car and all is fine. The ECU is re-flashed and the car starts again.

Here are my questions:

1. Did this happen because WORKS has changed the interface when they flashed the ECU?
2. Did WORKS lock the ECU and not tell my friend?
3. Is this ECUflash related. Mind you, this has NEVER happened on the 95 flashes that I have done on Evo Xs.

I really want to know why this happened. I hope it is not ECUflash related.

If I recall correctly Naji, Works does lock their flashes. I could be having a memory lapse though and be completely wrong. Wouldn't be the first time...

Thanks for refreshing my memory. I recall that an Evo 8 of a dear friend of mine had a P2 flash and had the ECU locked. The tuner had to use MalibuJack's ECU unlocker tool to read/re-tune the ECU.

That was on an Evo 8/9. It is entirely possible that they are still doing it on the X.

Works are Locked....

but it wont mess the car up if you try to read it
you have to use the exit programming state, then all is well....

I personally can read / write over them, but its not public knowledge

Yeah its was me that it happened to. I wish Works could have told me or gave me a warning not to touch or try to read the ecu.

And...it did mess up my car just trying to read it. Car went into "limp mode". the fan came on and would not start, we tried everything.

Now im "stuck" with Works and have to schedule something with Works and EDO to have my car looked at if i have to reflash or re-tuned my car.

If HB Speed can do it, then go for it. But make sure that he will NOT lock your ECU. Have him put it in writing so you will not have to go through the crap that you and I went through today.

If I can repair bricked X ecu and I can read ANY flash and flash over ANY flash I'm pretty sure he will be safe.

That is not the question. The question is this: Are you going to lock his ECU after you tune the car with ECUflash?
