HOW-TO: Bench ECU (w/ Pictures!)

HOW TO: Polish a turd, aka fix a brick, aka bench your ECU

Author: Saiba Samurai (***************) / Koroshiya (evolutionm.net)
Special Thanks: Tephra, celica2evo, & my wife for ****ting a brick!

Parts Required
  • Few feet of 20-24 gauge wire (preferably different colors, I recommend 24 gauge)
  • 0.1" female connectors (Need at LEAST 15)
  • Heat shrink tubing or electrical tape

Tools Required
  • Brick (aka ECU)
  • Tactrix Cable
  • Power Supply
  • Wire Cutters
  • Crimpers
  • Soldering Iron (optional)
  • Heat Shrink Gun or Small Lighter (optional)

Recommended Number of People
[*]1 (+1 to taunt you incessantly about how the Evo is supposed to be a tuner friendly car…)
Difficulty
  • 3 (10 if you drink a beer for every connector you make)

Time to complete
  • 30-60 minutes

Step by Step Instructions
  1. **** a brick.

  2. Be a real man and make a pile of them!

  3. Correct your grammar. ****, a brick! (If you don't get this, stop here, you can't handle this.)

  4. Create a group of wires to power the ECU
    ECU Pins:
    71 -> GROUND
    82 -> +12V
    92 -> +12V
    104 -> +12V

  5. Create a group of wires to power the ODBII
    OBDII Pins:
    4 -> GROUND
    5 -> GROUND
    16 -> +12V

  6. Create a group of wires to connect the ECU to OBDII
    ECU to OBDII Pins:
    ECU 80 -> OBD 7
    ECU 90 -> OBD 6
    ECU 91 -> OBD 14
    ECU 103 -> OBD 12

  7. Connect the wires to the appropriate pins

  8. Hook it up to a 12V Power Supply.

  9. Choose "Alternate flash method" in ECUFlash options.

  10. Load up your “Last Known Good ROM”

  11. Flash your Last Known Good ROM - this will take at least a minute.

  12. Now deselect "Alternate flash method" in ECUFlash options.

  13. Flash your “Last Known Good ROM” AGAIN (This will configure the ECU properly.)

  14. Stick the ECU back in the car - it should work properly!

Haha Hey Jason if I could give you a hand I would. Let me see if I can get through my Chem work then I'll come over and lick wires to find the power for you.

Can you use this method to just put the ecu back to stock? I think i have done something terribly wrong and I'm trying to undo any XML mods I did on my laptop that, "of all things" CRASHED a few days ago and I lost all of my modded XMLs. How can you just put my evo x MR back to stock everything?!?

Simply flash a stock ROM back. But the changes are in your ROM, not the XML definitions.

Just Read the ROM off your ECU and get new definitions. Simple. Done.
