is cobb ap the way to go w/ a stock car?
if you're even considering Cobb as an option, you're probably better off picking Cobb, as your lack of interest in the technical merits of the tactrix+ecuflash combo would likely end up in frustration and/or disaster.
if you look around the classifieds, historically, you'll find plenty of people selling their Cobb AP to trade up to ecuflash, yet very few (if any!) going the other way. wonder why?

I had an AP. Now I have a 2.0 cable and EvoScan + EvoScan Navigator.
I personally love the Opensource side of it. And the Nav is amazing. I currently have 12 parameters up for me to watch while I'm driving. Cobb AP gave me 1. Plus 4 of them are gauges that look cool.
It really comes down to Personal Preference. The Cobb is great for beginners and (dare I say) idiots. I am a Software Engineer and love being able to edit all my configuration files and table definitions and adding new things to log. It's easy and simple for me, but it may be super complicated for others.
So, choose which ever you want. In the end, the AP cost the same as a 2.0 cable and EvoScan Nav. And someday the Nav will be able to flash my car, so it will do everything the AP does, only better. Oh, and the locals love the fact that I have a 2.0 cable and can flash almost anything from Scubies to Evos to some domestics.

Even if you buy a cheap laptop. It is still a laptop, not a pocket sized device... I suppose you could store it under a seat or secure it in your trunk or something... But still.
I also would NEVER pay over 550 for an AP. I waited months to get mine until I found one for 400 shipped.
Buschur tune $575, AP $595, wheres the savings? https://secure.buschurracing.com/cat...oducts_id=1205
Plus with AP I can go back to stock without have to mail in my ECU.

We do a custom dyno tune for $375 actually. The mail in flash pricing is less than that and includes over night shipping of your ECU. If you want the flash e-mailed it's even less, $180. How's that work out? With the e-mail tune as I pointed out once already, you keep your stock tune on your laptop (which in 2009 most people own) and when you need it, you can load it back in the car. If you don't have a laptop park close to the window and run a cable outside and do it from your home computer, maybe you can get a long *** extension cord and carry your home computer out in the driveway.
Either way, ECUFLASH is superior.
No, ad hominem will get you nowhere.
What you fail to mention, is that you can do the exact same tweaking with the AP + AccessRace (no extra charge for AP owners).

And if TephraMods are going to make it so you can switch between maps without even needing a device (as was mentioned above) then forget the AP. I'm not sure how this would work though, unless the ECU is going to be able to automatically adjust based on fuel and what not (though I don't see how a valet mode would work without a device to switch it).

Because it is the logical step up. I'm certainly not arguing that. It's a shame the economy mode didn't do much for you in the Evo, it gave me about 3 more MPG. On a 600 mile road trip, that adds up.

I'd suspect most netbooks would fit in the glove box. If not I'd bet they would fit in under the seat.
Used product comparison is semi invalid... and its not like OP2.0 cables are worthless. As mentioned, and I forgot to point out, you can tune a number of cars with one OP2.0 cable.

An off the shelf tune will be an off the shelf tune, no matter who you get it from or what you use to flash it to your ECU. Without the ability to see your actual AFR it is just a guess.
It may be a good guess, but it is still a guess and nothing more.
