Internal VIN location.

Hi guys I was speaking to a friend today who advised me of a problem he had fitting a new JDM ecu into a EUDM model. It turns out that the ETACS ecu looks to validate the vin number from the ecu prior to disabling the immobiliser. Has anyone found the internal VIN location through dissassembly?

The only way to get by this is to code the new ECU with the MUT3 since ECUFlash doesn't allow you to access the area where the VIN is stored.

I have a custom tool to write a new VIN to the ECU.

However there is more to getting a different ECU to work with said car.

You will need to go to a dealer and get them to "reinstate" the ECU to the car.

This will be your only and best shot at changing ECU's

Hi,

I am the friend John is talking about, the car as stated was a EUDM model, when the new JDM ecu was fitted all we had to do was put in the old chassis number, this was done with the MUTIII.

None of the keys need to be reset it was just plugged in, new chassis number put in, the ETCAS unit then found the right chassis number, turned the car over and it started.

Is there anyway this can be done with ECUflash or another programme other than the MUTIII.

If so I have another X that I will be doing the same to and it would be nice to try it out if at all possible ?

Cheers
Lee

Hi,

All of the uk cars are locked due to them having a reflash before they leave Mitsubishi UK and are a right pig to get in to, its a lot easier to buy a JDM ecu as they can be flashed, its just the vin number that is causing the problem.

Can you be more specific to the problem? I thought we've had quite a few questions / details about flashing specific tables in the EDM ROMs....

I'm guessing that ECU isn't cheap, and I'd love to see that money put toward something like an FMIC instead

All the UK cars have a ECUteK flash on them, when you plug in to download the rom the ECU looks for a "handshake/unlock code" before it will read or dump the rom, to get this code you need to contact ECUteK.

They will then send you the code to unlock the ecu they then email Mitsubishi UK and then this will invalidate the warrenty on the car. The main reason is tho I was lead to believe that you can also brick the ecu when using ecuflash on EDM cars when try to read/flash the ecu, is this not true ???

As for costs a ecu will set you back $470 us money.

I'm not sure if there are any ECUtek Tuners out there that would be willing to unlock ECUs, but that might help you out (unless you need a special code). I doubt it is currently possible, but I wonder if there is some easy way to bench the ECU and overwrite that communication section.

Either way, I'd be surprised if the dealer wouldn't do the same voiding of warranty when you have them reporgram the VIN into the non-standard ECU with the MUTIII tool. I'm not sure what that all entails, but it would probably be easy/SOP for them to write down the rom version or something along those lines.

You can brick any ECU on the X based on the way it is designed (including the USDM / JDM ones) but there is a benching process that makes it not very difficult to recover the flash and make it work again.

yeah just use the bench process to "unlock" the ECU...

As it is proven just to replace the VIN in the ECU...is there any chance to get this program so I can use my new EVO X ECU without going the dealer?
