What causes the spark plug to blow up like that? I've read a few stories about this. Seems like a common issue almost.

Ahh so its not from faulty/badly produced sparkplugs then. That's pretty much what I wanted to confirm before I replace my spark plugs

Hopefully it gets fixed soon, I would hate to have this happen to my car. 4500 miles and climbing!

I meant 'do not want' what was happening in this thread. As in I was headed the same path with the same car. OTS stage 1 was fine. Just a scary experience here!

knock knock. who's there? your ROD.

I knocked a 4g63 to death on a dyno. 1999 GS-T with intercooler, intake, exhaust and an AFC. What did it? BOOST LEAK. Had a worm-gear (never use those) clamp blow off in the fender well. The small stock turbo was spinning like crazy trying to make up for the leak. Way out of efficiency range blowing boiling air into the engine. The dyno operators (at a car show) simply threw fuel at it using the AFC and then did another pull. Whammmmm the sound of a toasted rod bearing. Knocked it the heck out. After that went fully built (and T-bolt clamps!)

Have them REPLACE the knock sensor(s) as well. If they are electrical duds then the car won't know to save itself by adding fuel and pulling timing, and lowering boost. That is why this is a strange story. On stock HP the engine is so safe, and has such a big safety net.

yeah little bits of metal like that can go out the exhaus, then bounce around the turbo compressor back into another cylinder and continue bunny hoping in and out of different cylinders wrecking every thing.. I've seen it lots before with other foreign objects etc. possibly even bouncing in and out of the intake with positive and negative pressures. Most good Sparkplugs are designed to withstand basic detonation. hard to believe this was not a faulty sparkplug.
